The latest Q1-2014 global broadband report from UK telecoms analyst Point Topic has revealed that the world is now home to 690.1 million fixed line broadband subscribers (+1.9% in the quarter), which is up from +0.4% recorded at the end of 2013. It’s also the first quarter where the market share for older copper line broadband connections (e.g. ADSL, SDSL) has dipped below 50%.

The joint £94m Connecting Devon and Somerset programme in England, which is working to make BT’s “fibre optic broadband” (FTTC/P) service available to more than 90% of local premises by the end of 2016 and hopefully 100% by 2020, has today announced a list of the next 42 communities that will benefit from its roll-out.

The £25m Digital Durham programme in England, which was recently extended (here) and now aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 98% of local premises by September 2016 (note: 96% will get “superfast” speeds of 25Mbps+), has begun the second phase of its roll-out by upgrading the Frosterley telephone exchange.

The £3.8m Go Digital Newcastle project, which aims to make BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” service available to 97% of local homes and businesses in Newcastle-upon-Tyne by the end of Summer 2015, has teamed up with Pupils from Walker Technology College to switch-on its first FTTC street cabinet in Wyedale Way (Walker).

The £15.9m Merseyside Connected project and £150m Project Jennifer scheme have teamed up to help BT roll-out their faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to reach more homes and businesses in Northern Liverpool, where the regeneration of Great Homer Street is now taking place.

Despite recent funding concerns from the Devon side of the joint £94m Connecting Devon and Somerset project in England, which is currently working with BT to make “fibre optic broadband” (FTTC/P) available to more than 90% of local premises by the end of 2016, the Somerset County Council has managed to find an extra £2.18m to fund expanded coverage.

The £20m+ West Sussex Better Connected project, which plans to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to around 98% of homes and businesses in West Sussex (England) by Spring 2016, has connected its first customers and announced the next telephone exchange areas to benefit. Some ultrafast FTTP may also be built.

The Central Superfast project, which aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) service available to around 91% of local premises in Central Bedfordshire (England) by spring 2016 (rising to 97% in Milton Keynes), has after 6 months of waiting for an update finally begun its roll-out in the hamlet of Stanford.

Budget Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has cut the price of their ‘Superpowered Fibre’ (FTTC) upgrade in half for the first 6 months of service, which means that existing customers can add broadband speeds of up to 38Mbps for an extra £5 per month (normally +£10) on top of their current package.

A new report has claimed that the controversial publicly funded Digital Region broadband network in South Yorkshire (England), which last year collapsed under its own debt pile after failing to attract enough customers (here) and which is now due to close in mid-August 2014 (here), could end up costing £70m to shut down completely.

The UK Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has put an additional £1 million towards helping to extend Dorset’s (southern England) local roll-out of superfast broadband (FTTC/P) technology to several remote rural communities in the low-lying Marshwood Vale valley area.

BT, as part of the wider Digital Scotland project, has started laying the first batch of 20 new submarine fibre optic cables (400 kms in total) around the western side of Scotland’s Highlands and Islands region. The work involves a special cable-laying ship and is being supported by Global Marine Systems, Orange Marine and A-2-Sea Solutions.

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has uploaded an interesting new map of the United Kingdom, which highlights the location of 570 telephone exchanges that aren’t on any of the current lists from BT for their superfast broadband (FTTC/P) roll-out (commercially or via the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK scheme).

A new study conducted by NL Kabal and Cable Europe, which is a trade association for cable operators like Virgin Media, has boldly predicted that in around 6 years’ time the average consumer demand for broadband ISP download speeds will reach a staggering 165Mbps and uploads of 20Mbps. Miles above today’s current average.

The national telecoms regulator has today confirmed that BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s UK phone and broadband network, will from 1st July 2014 be officially required to meet tougher quality of service standards (i.e. faster installs, quicker repairs and making available more information about their performance to the public). Shorter contracts and cheaper FTTC switching are also coming.

KC’s roll-out of ‘Lightstream’ superfast broadband technology in East Yorkshire (England), which is dominated by their 350Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/H) network (with some slower FTTC), is slowly moving outside of Hull and has now reached 350 homes in the small-ish civil parish village of Wawne (Waghen).

The £15.47 million CSW Broadband project, which hopes to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services available to 92% of Coventry, 96% of Solihull and 91% of Warwickshire in England by spring 2016 (overall 91% will get speeds of 24Mbps+), has today confirmed the next batch of communities to benefit from its Phase Two roll-out.
