Fibre optic infrastructure developer CityFibre, which recently announced plans to build a new fibre optic Public Sector Network in the city of Newport (here), has criticised business broadband connectivity in Wales as being “not fit for purpose” because, they claim, the “copper networks that were laid generations ago” are still holding the country back.

Urban fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has today announced that their Gigabit (1Gbps) capable FTTB/H broadband network has now been rolled out to reach 100,000 premises across the UK cities of London, Cardiff, Bristol, Reading, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle and Nottingham.

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has begun construction of a new 1000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) based broadband network for approximately 1,500 premises in the rural Peterborough (England) villages of Ashton, Bainton, Barnack, Helpston, Pilsgate, Southorpe, Tallington and Ufford.

During a database update we noted that fibre optic ISP Seethelight, which offers an ultrafast 300Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband package to several parts of the United Kingdom via the Independent Fibre Networks Limited platform, looks set to change some of its services and increase prices from 1st February 2015.

Good news. The B4RN 4 Yealand, Silverdale & Storth (B4YS) project has broken out a mole-ploughing monster and officially dug its first soil as part of their community-funded and built deployment of a new 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network for the three rural villages of Yealand, Silverdale and Storth in Lancashire (England).

The roll-out of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network on the English Channel Island of Jersey, which is being conducted by the state-owned JT Global (Jersey Telecom), looks to be under threat after the local government (States of Jersey) requested a £6m dividend from the Telco to help it plug a £31m budget deficit for 2014 (rising to £39m in 2015).

The European Commission has published its annual report into the coverage of superfast broadband (Next Generation Access) services around the EU, which again shows that the United Kingdom is making good progress on 30Mbps+ capable Next Gen (NGA) service delivery but still lags miles behind most other EU28 countries in terms of pure fibre optic connectivity (FTTH/P/B).

The British overseas territory of Gibraltar, which sits on the southern end of Spain’s Iberian Peninsula in the warm Mediterranean sea, looks set to benefit from even faster broadband after a new ISP called GibFibreSpeed began promising local Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) connections with speeds of up to 500Mbps (Megabits per second).

Residents of Dolphinholme village in Lancashire report that BT’s engineers have returned to resume their state aid fuelled deployment of 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband technology in the area, which is despite B4RN’s community funded 1000Mbps FTTP service being deployed to homes on one of the exact same streets.

The Government has responded to a recent Freedom of Information (FoI) request by revealing a breakdown of both successful and unsuccessful bids to their much criticised £20m Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF), which originally set out to help rural areas (i.e. in the last 10% of England) gain access to superfast broadband (24Mbps+).
