A new report has claimed that Abingdon-based broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has built a full fibre (FTTP) network across 612,000 premises in rural parts of England and is home to c.160,000 customers, have begun the process of hunting for a buyer as one of the preferred options for tackling their £1bn debt mountain.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today informed ISPs about a “realignment of prices” on their top two fastest Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tiers – 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps (both 120Mbps upstream), which in practice appears to mark a further price reduction. Rivals will perhaps remark that we’ve seen quite a few special offers from the incumbent of late.

Edinburgh-based UK alternative network GoFibre, which is rolling out a gigabit broadband (FTTP) network across remote rural parts of Scotland and Northern England, has been named as one of the top 50 fastest-growing businesses in Scotland by the UK Fast Growth Index for 2025.

The MP for North Shropshire in England, Helen Morgan (Liberal Democrat), has called on the Government to take urgent action in its ongoing attempts to find a solution after network provider Freedom Fibre scaled back their £24m (public subsidy) Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract for the region in June 2025.

Network operator Openreach (BT) looks set to improve the flexibility and cost of their reappointment process for changes to new provisions of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband lines, which will introduce an end customer reappointing calendar and waive the related amendment charge for ISPs.

The latest Q3 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 have revealed that their FTTP broadband network increased its coverage by 139,300 premises in the quarter (up from 114.9k in Q2). Similarly, related customers grew to total 5,704,300 (up by 60.8k in Q3 vs -51.4k in Q2) and O2’s mobile base jumped by 419,400 in the quarter, while also doing a multi-year deal with Starlink for satellite mobile (Direct to Cell).

A major newspaper has this morning claimed that broadband giant Virgin Media (O2) have opened non-exclusive talks with alternative full fibre network operator Netomnia (Youfibre, Brsk), which could result in a £2bn deal that would expand VMO2’s network coverage and potentially remove a key competitor from the market. CityFibre are also said to be interested in the altnet.

Carlisle-based alternative broadband network and UK ISP Grain, which recently secured a £225m funding boost to continue their expansion (here), has revealed that they’ve now begun to expand their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) lines across the Lincolnshire (England) market town of Gainsborough; home to over 20,000 people.

The CEO of broadband and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2), Lutz Schüler, has today warned the UK government against reforming business rates in a way that would impose a “hefty hike” on telecoms providers because, he says, it would act as a “disincentive to invest that will be a real kick in the cabinets” to the industry. At a time when they’re already under pressure.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has notified UK internet providers (ISPs) about the looming launch of a new special offer on their Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) lines for speeds of 1Gbps or below. The deal will apply a rental discount of 10% on the current one-year term rental prices with no CPI price rises for a full 36 or 60 months in return for signing up to a new 36 or 60-month term.

Internet service provider WightFibre, which is deploying a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband network across the Isle of Wight – just off the South Coast of Hampshire (England), have begun informing existing customers of their full fibre packages that they’ll now have to pay a monthly fee to keep their “free” phone line service.

Hundreds of customers on Netomnia’s (Substantial Group) alternative broadband network in the Bristol (South West England) area, which has now covered 2.8 million UK premises RFS (inc. 400,000 customers) with their full fibre (FTTP) lines, are suffering connectivity problems after Openreach “took down one of our main cables” yesterday afternoon.

The Government’s (DSIT) Building Digital UK agency has today finally started to publish monthly updates on the delivery progress of contracts that have been awarded under their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which among other things reveals that some 150,730 contracted premises have already been built out of a planned total of 1,002,270 (October 2025).

The Senior MD at Macquarie, Oliver Bradley, has revealed that that one of the alternative broadband networks they support, Voneus, recently completed a renegotiation on their existing £70m debt facility over the summer. The move saw existing investors inject an unspecified amount of fresh funding to keep the operator going.
