The Senior MD at Macquarie, Oliver Bradley, has revealed that that one of the alternative broadband networks they support, Voneus, recently completed a renegotiation on their existing £70m debt facility over the summer. The move saw existing investors inject an unspecified amount of fresh funding to keep the operator going.

Alternative network ISP Quickline, which is rolling out a new gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) and wireless (FWA) broadband network across rural parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England (3-Year Rollout Plan), has just extended their fibre network to three more rural communities along the banks of the River Ouse – the villages of Swinefleet, Reedness and Whitgift. Plus Patrington, Tickton and Broomfleet in other areas.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative broadband ISP networks, has announced that their efforts through the previously announced Infrastructure Sharing Group (ISG) have now resulted in the creation of a new infrastructure sharing venture – supporting the use of 500,000km of “spare fibre capacity“.

Two of the largest backers of the UK’s alternative broadband networks, NatWest and Lloyds, have now scaled back new lending to the heavily indebted sector. The move follows an earlier report in August 2025 (here), which revealed that a number of banks had set aside funding to cover loans issued to altnets (now deemed unlikely to be repaid in full).

American network supplier ScaleFibre, which manufactures and delivers optical fibre connectivity kit and cables to broadband operators, has announced that they’ve established ScaleFibre UK Ltd as part of their expansion into Europe. Giving digital network builders in the UK another option to consider.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today banned yet another direct mailing advert for alternative full fibre broadband ISP Zzoomm, which occurred after it was found that the mail was NOT “obviously identifiable as a marketing communication” and misled recipients about the importance of its content.

Internet provider TalkTalk has today continued their efforts to boost the take-up of their home broadband services by launching their self-proclaimed “lowest ever price” on a 900Mbps full fibre (FTTP) package, which drops it from £38 to £30 per month on a 24-month minimum term for new subscribers.

The CEO of Hull-based alternative UK network operator MS3, Guy Miller, has today announced his intention to “step away” from the company at Christmas after an “incredible four years“. The provider’s full fibre (FTTP) broadband network currently covers 234,000 premises (212k RFS) in the North of England and has connected 20,000 customers.

National network operator Openreach (BT) has published the latest quarterly update on their roll-out of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband ISP technology. The update reflects all the recent changes and progress with their existing locations and doesn’t appear to add any new areas beyond those confirmed in July 2025 (here).

The Derbyshire County Council (DCC) in England has agreed to invest £900,000 to support the launch of two grant programmes, which will aim to improve broadband connectivity in at least some of the communities – predominantly rural ones – that are currently still expected to miss out on access to faster connections.

Network operator and broadband ISP 4th Utility, which have been quietly deploying their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service to UK homes (SDU) and large residential buildings (MDU), this week published their annual accounts for the year ended 31st March 2025 and reported a “doubling of monthly subscriptions sold through the year“.

New customers looking to join Virgin Media (O2) should note that the ISP has just introduced some bigger discounts across some of their home broadband and bundle packages. For example, Virgin’s 1130Mbps (1Gbps) package is now just £29.99 per month on a 24-month minimum term (price increases to £33.99 from April 2026 and £37.99 from April 2027).

Customers of fixed broadband provider Virgin Media (O2) have today been informed that the ISP is “starting to upgrade” those with their older Hub 3 (TG2492S/CE) and Hub 4 (TG3492LG-VMB) Wi-Fi routers to its newer, more advanced Hub 5 device “at no extra cost“.

Apparently, Shetland wasn’t the only remote UK island to suffer broadband and phone disruption (here) due to a broken subsea fibre cable after Storm Amy struck Scotland earlier this month. Homes and businesses on the tiny Inner Hebrides island of Tiree are suffering from a similar problem, but have been left with much more uncertainty over its resolution.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed changes under their 5-yearly Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR) to how they set charge controls and regulate the pricing of certain Openreach based fibre broadband (FTTC/P) products, such as the regulated 80Mbps (currently 40Mbps) wholesale tier and connection fees for FTTP lines.

Network operator Openreach (BT), which has recently taken some flak for its broadband discounts (here), have launched another somewhat curious new promotion for ISPs that cuts the rental charge on all New to Network (NTN) full fibre (FTTP) lines to £0 for the first 12 months when the customer originates from a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service.
