The Digital Scotland project has today announced that 500,000 additional premises have now been put within reach of BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, but there’s still no sign of the expected second contract in order to help expand coverage beyond the current target(s).

A local retailer and restaurant in Hungerford are two of the first premises in West Berkshire (England) to benefit from the roll-out of Gigaclear’s new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which aims to cover around 12,000 homes and businesses by the end of 2017.

In a surprise move BTOpenreach has today unveiled a new middle tier bandwidth product for their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “fibre broadband” services, which offers download speeds of up to 55Mbps and uploads of 10Mbps.

Last month the Government confirmed that their Broadband Delivery UK project with BT had so far managed to extend superfast (24Mbps+) capable “fibre broadband” services to 3,311,843 extra premises and today we’ve also got the latest consumer take-up figures for each local authority.

The state aid supported Superfast Cymru project with BT has today announced that their ultrafast 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has been made available to premises in the village of Nasareth (Gwynedd). The one in Wales, of course, and NOT the childhood home of Jesus.

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve found financing of £180m to help expand and commercialise their national UK Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband / Ethernet network and one of their first moves is to gobble KCOM Group’s UK network assets for £90m.

The Cotswolds Broadband project, which last year tendered for a supplier to help roll-out a new mixed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and wireless superfast broadband network to rural premises in West Oxfordshire (England), has confirmed that construction will finally get under-way during spring 2016.

A new report from Point Topic suggests that consumer and business uptake of Gigabit (1000Mbps+) class broadband connections, which are often delivered via pure fibre optic lines (FTTH/P), is on the rise. But uncertainty still exists around the ultimate demand for such services, particularly symmetric in the residential market.

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has confirmed that their first 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based cabinet is now live as part of the £10m Fastershire contract (here), which aims to reach an extra 6,495 premises in rural Gloucestershire (Cotswolds) by the end of May 2017.

As expected BT are now starting their third 6 month trial of G.fast broadband technology (ITU G.9701), this time in Swansea (Wales), which will initially offer Internet download speeds of up to 330Mbps (50Mbps upload) before rising to 500Mbps over the next decade.

The Herefordshire Council has said that BT has decided “not to participate” in Stage 3 of their tender to deploy superfast broadband connectivity to the remaining parts of the county, which means that the local authority may have to depend upon alternative network (altnet) providers.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset project, which suffered a big setback in June 2015 after failing to reach a deal to extend “superfast broadband” coverage with BT (here), will be hoping to get back on its horse today when it meets with 32 alternative suppliers to debate a new contract.
