The Digital Derbyshire project, which is working with BT and the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme to make “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity available to 95% of local premises by the end of 2016, looks set to reach more areas after a new Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract was signed.

Ordinarily the news that BT is bringing fibre optic broadband (FTTC/P) cables to your area would be welcome. But it’s not always so and sometimes the use of public money to help upgrade the smallest of UK rural areas, especially when a “superfast” (24Mbps+) capable provider is already serving local customers, can raise concerns.

The county of Hampshire in England can celebrate after it recently became the latest Broadband Delivery UK based Government programme with BT to complete its target of ensuring that 90% of homes and businesses can access “superfast” Internet download speeds of 24Mbps+ by the end of 2015.

Who? A strange and unexpected press release just crossed our desk, which stems from a company in the Netherlands that we’ve not heard of before, Angie Communications. Essentially they plan to “aggressively” rollout a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to 3 million premises and make “4.5G” and 5G mobile broadband available to 95% and 90% of the UK respectively by 2021.

The Cotswolds Broadband project, which last year tendered for a supplier to help roll-out a 100Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to the majority of homes and businesses in West Oxfordshire (England), now looks set to begin building the network by September 2015.

After a few last minutes problems the community co-operative Digital Dales (Fibre GarDen) project has officially started the build-phase for their new 100Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which will serve 580 premises in the rural villages of Garsdale and Dentdale (Cumbria, England).

The on-going rollout of superfast capable “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services across the UK by BT has hit a snag after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled that the revised estimated service availability dates, which BTOpenreach supply, were “likely to mislead consumers” because they were not based on a proper analysis.

A tiny rural community called Metheringham Fen in Lincolnshire (England’s East Midlands) has complained that their broadband speeds have actually gotten worse since BT is alleged to have upgraded the local connectivity. The situation has forced some locals to shell out on an expensive and restrictive Satellite solution instead.

The Digital Scotland project, which is working with BT to roll-out “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to 85% of premises in Scotland by the end of 2015/16 and 95% by the end of 2017/18, has today announced the next batch of 200 communities (145,000 premises) that will benefit from that deployment.

The European Commission’s new Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Günther Oettinger, has for the first time started to discuss what targets we should aim for after the current Digital Agenda programme completes and hopefully delivers “superfast” broadband speeds of 30Mbps+ to all by 2020; with 50% also subscribed to a 100Mbps+ service.

The Superfast Staffordshire project in the West Midlands (England), which also includes Stoke-on-Trent, has just signed a second Broadband Delivery UK contract under the Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) and it should bring “fibre broadband” to even more areas.

The Connecting Cambridgeshire project, which is currently working with BT to make superfast broadband speeds available to 90% of premises in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (England) by the end of 2015, has signed an extended Broadband Delivery UK contract that should push the coverage up to around 95% by the end of 2017.

The incumbent telecoms operator for Hull in East Yorkshire (England), KC, has announced the launch of several new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “Lightstream” fibre optic broadband packages for businesses, with download speed options of 250Mbps, 500Mbps, 750Mbps and 1000Mbps.
