Devon and Somerset Name 42 New Communities for Fibre Broadband

The joint £94m Connecting Devon and Somerset programme in England, which is working to make BT’s “fibre optic broadband” (FTTC/P) service available to more than 90% of local premises by the end of 2016 and hopefully 100% by 2020, has today announced a list of the next 42 communities that will benefit from its roll-out.

Rural-focused fibre optic (FTTP) broadband ISP Gigaclear has secured private investment worth £7.75 million to help fund the next phase of its growth and a roll-out of 1000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Internet access into more areas, which could reach 15,000 premises by the end of 2015 and go much further in the future.

The £25m Digital Durham programme in England, which was recently extended (here) and now aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 98% of local premises by September 2016 (note: 96% will get “superfast” speeds of 25Mbps+), has begun the second phase of its roll-out by upgrading the Frosterley telephone exchange.

The £3.8m Go Digital Newcastle project, which aims to make BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” service available to 97% of local homes and businesses in Newcastle-upon-Tyne by the end of Summer 2015, has teamed up with Pupils from Walker Technology College to switch-on its first FTTC street cabinet in Wyedale Way (Walker).

UPD BT Subsea Fibre Optic Cables Begin to Connect Rural West Scotland

BT, as part of the wider Digital Scotland project, has started laying the first batch of 20 new submarine fibre optic cables (400 kms in total) around the western side of Scotland’s Highlands and Islands region. The work involves a special cable-laying ship and is being supported by Global Marine Systems, Orange Marine and A-2-Sea Solutions.

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has uploaded an interesting new map of the United Kingdom, which highlights the location of 570 telephone exchanges that aren’t on any of the current lists from BT for their superfast broadband (FTTC/P) roll-out (commercially or via the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK scheme).

A new study conducted by NL Kabal and Cable Europe, which is a trade association for cable operators like Virgin Media, has boldly predicted that in around 6 years’ time the average consumer demand for broadband ISP download speeds will reach a staggering 165Mbps and uploads of 20Mbps. A promotional Twitter account for all things Cornish has claimed that Cornwall now has the “highest level of FTTP (Fibre-to-the-Premises) coverage in the UK“, with the service allegedly being “available” (premises passed) to around 62,000 local homes and businesses, and it’s all thanks to the joint £132m EU and BT “Big Build” Superfast Cornwall scheme.

Wales UK Superfast Broadband Rollout Project Reaches 135K Premises

The Superfast Cymru scheme, which is supported by public funding and aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network (speeds of up to 80Mbps) available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of spring 2016, has now helped a total of 134,707 premises (most are homes and 4% businesses) in Wales to access the new connectivity.
