Study Tests the Theoretical Limits of Copper Line Broadband

New research from the University of Cambridge – supported by BT and Huawei – has attempted to identify the theoretical limits of Openreach’s standard UK copper broadband lines (unshielded twisted copper pairs), while harnessing up to 12GHz of spectrum. The result is faster speeds are possible, but full fibre is still the future.

Connected Nations 2021 – UK Gigabit Broadband Cover Hits 47%

Ofcom has released their Connection Nations 2021 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that the coverage of “gigabit-capable” (1Gbps+) broadband ISP networks has jumped from 27% last year to 47% now (13.7 million households). Plus, around half of UK properties are in areas where 5G mobile is available outside.

Openreach has today revealed the pilot pricing for the new Advanced Install option on their stand-alone broadband products for UK ISPs, which are more technically known as Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA) products on FTTC (VDSL2) lines or SOGfast on G.fast lines. UK ISP Sky Broadband has today kicked off their “Black Friday” discounts by further reducing the price of their “Superfast Broadband” (59Mbps down – FTTC/P) package to just £25 per month and introducing free setup (normally £19.95). On top of that, their optional WiFi Guarantee add-on is now £3 instead of £5 per month.

The BT Group has published their Q2 2021/22 results, which reports that their consumer ISP division now has a total of 945,000 broadband customers on their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (up from 860K last quarter), while Openreach has grown their UK FTTP coverage to 5.78m premises (up from 5.16m). Build costs have also fallen.

Energy provider and UK ISP Shell Energy has updated the prices of their broadband packages (ADSL, FTTC and G.fast) and also dropped their previous promise for “no end-of-contract price rises.” In addition, Shell has adopted BT’s approach to annual price hikes, which will see prices rise each year by CPI (inflation) + up to 3%.
