BT Staying Tight Lipped Over New Bundle Netflix and Broadband Deal

Customer of BT’s consumer broadband and phone services in the United Kingdom will soon be able to bundle Netflix’s popular unlimited Internet TV and Movie streaming service alongside the ISPs broadband, television and phone products, all as part of a single bill.

EE UK Home Broadband Customers Rise to 793K as 4G Tops 5.6m

Internet and mobile operator EE has today published their latest results for Q3-2014, which saw fixed line home broadband subscribers grow at a slightly slower pace to top 793,000 customers (up +18k in Q3, which is down from +30k in Q2 and level with +19k in Q1). Meanwhile their 4G (LTE) users grew +1.4 million to top 5.6m (roughly level with Q2 growth).

No More BT Sport Channels via Aerial for Some BTVision TV Customers

Customers of the BT TV (IPTV) service, specifically those with legacy BTVision+ set-top-boxes, will from 20th October 2014 no longer be able to access the operators BTSport channels via the encrypted digital terrestrial transmission using a supplied viewing card. But there is a small caveat.

Mobile operator and ISP EE (Everything Everywhere) will today go head-to-head with BT, TalkTalk, Sky Broadband (BSkyB) and Virgin Media when they become the latest telecoms giant to introduce their own TV (IPTV) product, with the related Set-Top-Box (STB) being offered for free to their 775,000 existing Home Broadband customers.

Cable operator Virgin Media has moved from its previously somewhat neutral stance, specifically in the conflict between BSkyB (Sky Broadband) and BT over Premier League TV rights, by lodging an official complaint with Ofcom and pleading for the comms regulator to help stop the costs of related content from getting out of control.

Sky UK Confirms Delayed 40 Percent NOW TV Price Hike is Back

Back in the spring Sky’s broadband-based NOW TV video streaming service announced that plans for a sudden 40% price hike of their popular Entertainment Pass, which gives customers access to 10 major live premium TV channels (e.g. Sky One and Sky Atlantic), would be put on hold (here). Now the bad news.. that price hike is back.

PlusNet has informed ISPreview.co.uk that their 8 month old customer trial of a YouView (IPTV) based broadband TV service is “going very well“, but sadly even after all this time they’re still unable to give any indication of when a commercial launch might occur.

Sony has given broadband ISPs another set of data hogs to worry about after they confirmed that consumers in the United Kingdom would be the first in Europe to beta test their new PlayStation Now streaming service in 2015, while their PlayStation TV product (designed to take on Google Chromecast and NOW TV etc.) is expected to surface this autumn 2014.

BT TV Service Confirms Sky Sports 5 Inclusion At No Extra Cost

BT has confirmed that new and existing TV (IPTV) customers will be able to watch the new Sky Sports 5 channel, which is dedicated to European Football, on their BT Vision+ set-top-box when it’s launched by Sky today (channel 524). But standard broadband (non – BTInfinity) subscribers will have to wait a few weeks longer.

TalkTalk UK Creep to 4.206m Broadband Users as York FTTP Plan Progresses

Budget ISP TalkTalk has revealed the latest results for Q2-2014 (calendar), which saw their broadband subscriber base grow by +10,000 in the quarter to total 4,206,000 (i.e. stable growth from +10k added in Q1). Meanwhile their planned roll-out of ultrafast FTTP broadband in the city of York is also making progress.

UPDATE YouView Broadband TV Service Brings Faster Humax DTR-T2000

The broadband based YouView (IPTV) catch-up and video-on-demand TV service, which is also bundled via several broadband ISPs (BT, TalkTalk etc.), has today launched a cheaper and faster set-top-box for retailers called the Humax DTR-T2000 (NOT to be confused with the HDR-2000T). But sadly there’s still no mention of WiFi support.

Copper Lines Decline as Global Fixed Broadband Lines Top 690M

The latest Q1-2014 global broadband report from UK telecoms analyst Point Topic has revealed that the world is now home to 690.1 million fixed line broadband subscribers (+1.9% in the quarter), which is up from +0.4% recorded at the end of 2013. It’s also the first quarter where the market share for older copper line broadband connections (e.g. ADSL, SDSL) has dipped below 50%.
