Hull-based incumbent broadband provider KCOM, which has built a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across large parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England, has named three more winners for their Digital Inclusion Grants – worth a combined £20k. A total of £100,000 has so far been paid out to related projects since the scheme started.

Strategic consultancy firm Eight Advisory has today published the third edition of their Takeup Tracker, which examines the rise in take-up across the UK’s many alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband networks (altnets) and compares it with that of Openreach (BT). This edition also takes a deeper dive into take-up by age of network – a key factor in gauging progress.

Hull-based network operator KCOM, which has already deployed their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across a big chunk of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, has today quietly published their first terms and pricing details for a new PIA solution. The product allows rivals to run new fibre via the operator’s existing cable ducts and poles.

Ofcom has today published their 2025 study of UK broadband, phone and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaint levels, fault repairs, compensation and install times for the largest providers. For example, TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%) and Plusnet (BT) secured the highest (91%).

Hull-based alternative UK network operator MS3, which has deployed their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network across 234,000 premises (207k RFS) in the North of England and connected 18,000 customers (mostly in the Hull and Humber region), appears to have returned to life after suffering a major service outage yesterday. But some users may need to reboot their routers.

Ofcom have today published their latest quarterly (Q4 2024) study of UK consumer telecoms complaints, which shames NOW Broadband (NOW TV) and TalkTalk for attracting the most complaints about broadband, while O2 took the most heat for Mobile and Virgin Media was put on the naughty step for Pay TV services.

Around 800 premises in the East Yorkshire (England) port town of Goole (DN14) are experiencing protracted disruption to their FTTP broadband and phone services after a car crashed into one of UK ISP KCOM’s street cabinets on Sunday night at 10:55pm, which completely disconnected the apparatus from all of its cables.

Broadband, mobile and phone provider Vodafone UK has today announced that they’ve teamed up with rival ISPs BT, KCOM and Zen Internet to help bring an improved Broadband Battery Backup (BBU) device for WiFi routers to market, which is said to be capable of powering a customers broadband router (inc. digital phone/voice service) for up to 4-to-7 hours.

Hull-based phone and broadband ISP KCOM, which have deployed a full fibre (FTTP) network across 305,000 premises in parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England), has taken the decision to close a tiny “community library” in Skidby, that was set up during 2020 inside the village phone box, because it posed a “serious fire risk“.

The FTTH Council Europe has published an interesting new report that looks at the progress being made across 27 EU member states (and the United Kingdom) in switching off older copper based broadband networks as part of adopting gigabit full-fibre infrastructure. The report finds a mixed picture, with Portugal, Spain and Sweden leading the way, while others lag far behind.
