A recent report from banking giant Credit Suisse has estimated that Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks will cover 90% of the UK by 2025. The country was also found to be the “most attractive market” for incremental investment in such networks, thanks to “strong build momentum and interest” in faster broadband.

The Office of National Statistics has today published the latest UK inflation figures, which sees the Consumer Price Index (CPI) hit 5.4% and the Retail Price Index (RPI) reach 7.5%! Many of the country’s biggest broadband ISPs base their annual price rises off the figure published in January, thus we now know how huge the hit will be.

UK ISP KCOM, which has so far built a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 250,000 premises across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire in England (here), has made the hugely positive decision to scrap their contractual CPI + 3.9% price rise for this year to help customers facing the cost of living crisis.

KCOM, which recently extended their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 250,000 premises across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire in England (here), have published their annual accounts and revealed that their total broadband customer base has grown to 139,700 (most are now on fibre, having migrated from copper).

Ofcom has published some of the first responses from UK broadband ISPs and internet content providers to their new review of Net Neutrality rules, which were designed to ensure no serious blocking or slowing of access to legal websites or other online services by ISPs and mobile operators. Suffice to say, vested interests split the pack.

UK ISP Connexin, which a few months ago (here) confirmed they would invest £80m to end KCOM’s “broadband monopoly” in Hull and East Yorkshire by building their own rival 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, has this week achieved a key milestone with the installation of their first street cabinet.

The incumbent broadband operator for the city of Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, looks set to get some real competition after UK alternative network ISP Grain bravely announced that they would be deploying their gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network into the same location. But other operators have similar plans.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today announced that they intend to protect around 5,000 “vital phone boxes” from closure by BT and KCOM, but only those that are truly still needed by local communities. Without such protection, some of those phone boxes considered “vital” would still have been set for removal.

Ofcom has today published the outcome of their latest Hull Area Wholesale Fixed Telecoms Market Review 2021-26, which tends to largely influence what rules they set for KCOM’s dominant network in the Hull (East Yorkshire) area. The main changes this time reflect deregulation and a new Dark Fibre requirement.

Fixed wireless broadband ISP Connexin last year revealed that they were looking to deploy their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the North of England (here). The provider has now confirmed that they’re investing £80m to “[end] the broadband monopoly” in Hull and East Yorkshire (tacit reference to KCOM).

Cloud gaming ISP ZYBRE, which back in July 2021 became available to homes covered by KCOM’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, has now been extended across the rest of the UK by offering both SOGEA (standalone FTTC) and full fibre via Openreach’s network too.

Ofcom has published their annual study into UK fixed line home broadband ISP speeds, which reports that the average (median) download rate has risen from 50Mbps last year to just 50.4Mbps now (uploads are unchanged at 9.8Mbps). Meanwhile, the performance gap between urban and rural areas remains a problem.

Hull-based UK ISP KCOM has today confirmed that thousands of premises in the two North Lincolnshire communities of Crowle and Haxey will be the next to benefit from their £100m network expansion, which is currently extending the reach of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network.

A short but interesting debate was held yesterday in the Lords Chamber, which appeared to indicate that the UK Government are not, at present, pressing Ofcom to introduce mandatory low cost social tariffs for broadband across the industry. But like the regulator, they would like to see better promotion of those that exist.
