Fixed wireless broadband ISP Connexin last year revealed that they were looking to deploy their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the North of England (here). The provider has now confirmed that they’re investing £80m to “[end] the broadband monopoly” in Hull and East Yorkshire (tacit reference to KCOM).

Cloud gaming ISP ZYBRE, which back in July 2021 became available to homes covered by KCOM’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, has now been extended across the rest of the UK by offering both SOGEA (standalone FTTC) and full fibre via Openreach’s network too.

Ofcom has published their annual study into UK fixed line home broadband ISP speeds, which reports that the average (median) download rate has risen from 50Mbps last year to just 50.4Mbps now (uploads are unchanged at 9.8Mbps). Meanwhile, the performance gap between urban and rural areas remains a problem.

A short but interesting debate was held yesterday in the Lords Chamber, which appeared to indicate that the UK Government are not, at present, pressing Ofcom to introduce mandatory low cost social tariffs for broadband across the industry. But like the regulator, they would like to see better promotion of those that exist.

Hull-based UK broadband ISP KCOM, which was gobbled up by Macquarie Infrastructure for £627m in 2019 (here), appears to have sold their off-net Eclipse Internet base to the Global 4 Group for an undisclosed sum. By the looks of it the provider will now make a return under the Eclipse Broadband name.

The standard prices have also been tweaked (some are cheaper, some are not).

Ofcom has published their 2021 survey of UK broadband ISP and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest providers. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%), while Three UK did the same for mobile (86%). Generally, customer service has taken a COVID-19 hit.
