UPD Gov Target 1Gbps WiFi and Mobile Broadband on All UK Mainline Trains

The Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) will tomorrow at 9am begin a new ‘Call for Evidence’ on proposals that could help to make WiFi and Mobile (5G) broadband speeds of 1Gbps available onboard all UK mainline train routes by 2025.

Yesterday evening the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) declared completion of the first real specification for the future 5G Mobile standard (5G New Radio Non-Standalone) at a meeting in Lisbon (Portugal), which occurred sooner than the originally expected early 2018 date.

Ofcom’s planned auction of 4G and 5G friendly radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands might soon proceed after the High Court rejected an appeal by Three UK, which had demanded that the regulator impose a 30% spectrum cap in order to stop EE (BT) from bidding.

Vodafone and Ericsson Conduct UK 5G Mobile Field Trial at 3.5GHz

Mobile operator Vodafone and Ericsson today claim to have become the “first” in the United Kingdom to conduct a live pre-standard test of future 5G Mobile technology, which was run both indoors and outdoors in central London using the 3.5GHz radio spectrum band.

After a final consultation (here) the Government has today revealed its chosen path for implementing a new legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO), which promises a minimum broadband download speed of 10Mbps (1Mbps upload) for all by 2020 and rejects BT’s £600m voluntary proposal.

A Free Text Message is All You Need to Switch UK Mobile Operator

Ofcom has today introduced a new change that means switching Mobile Network Operator (2G, 3G or 4G) in the United Kingdom will now become as easy as simply sending a free text message, although the new system won’t be fully introduced for another 18 months (1st July 2019).

A new batch of crowd-sourced data from RFBenchmark compares European countries by their Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) performance. Overall the UK appears to trail most other countries with an average download of 11.9Mbps (4.2Mbps upload) and network latency of 108 milliseconds.

Crowd-sourced data experts OpenSignal have just published their Mobile Network performance study for the United Kingdom, which found that EE came top for 4G and 3G download speed and network availability. On the flip side Vodafone delivered the fastest 4G and 3G latency times.

A study of crowd sourced data from Tutela Technologies has found that mobile operator EE delivered the fastest 4G based Mobile Broadband speed and latency in the United Kingdom, although Vodafone came out top for older 3G networks and they also experienced less packet loss.

Successful Trial Sees TFL Prep 4G Mobile to Cover London Tube from 2019

Transport for London has reported that their recent (summer) trial of a 4G Mobile network distribution technology, which ran in Tube tunnels on the Waterloo and City Line, was a success. Tfl are now tendering for a service provider that can deploy it across their entire Tube network from 2019.

UK Mobile Operators Win Appeal vs 2014 Radio Spectrum Licence Fee Hike

The UK Court of Appeal has reversed an earlier ruling that found in favour of Ofcom’s proposed hike to annual licence fees for the 900MHz and 1800MHz (3G / 4G) radio spectrum bands, which could have resulted in price rises for consumers and less investment by Mobile Network Operators.

EE Delivers 5G Mobile Broadband Speeds of 2.8Gbps in First Network Test

Mobile operator EE (BT) and Huawei have conducted their first UK lab test of an end-to-end 5G network, which delivered a consistent download speed of 2.8Gbps (Gigabits per second) using an active antenna unit with 64×64 MIMO broadcasting via the 3.5GHz radio spectrum band.

Vodafone Claims Gatwick Has their Fastest UK 4G Mobile Airport Speeds

Mobile operator Vodafone has claimed that a major upgrade of their fibre optic and mobile infrastructure means that Gatwick Airport now has the “most reliable” and “fastest” 4G based Mobile Broadband speeds of any UK airport within their coverage. Speeds of up to 200Mbps are said to be possible.
