Mobile operator O2 has today signed a huge 18-year agreement with the Zayo Group, which will see the mobile giant replace their old SDH and Ethernet-based managed services infrastructure with a new “fully resilient core” fibre optic network across the United Kingdom.

Internet and mobile operator EE has today published their latest results for Q3-2014, which saw fixed line home broadband subscribers grow at a slightly slower pace to top 793,000 customers (up +18k in Q3, which is down from +30k in Q2 and level with +19k in Q1). Meanwhile their 4G (LTE) users grew +1.4 million to top 5.6m (roughly level with Q2 growth).

Electronics giant Samsung claims to have successfully delivered record setting Mobile Broadband speeds of a staggering 7.5Gbps (Gigabits per second) using a prototype of their next generation 5G technology, with the uninterrupted speeds falling away to 1.2Gbps when the service was tested while travelling at just over 60Mph (Miles per hour) on a 4.35km long racetrack.

Mobile operator EE has told ISPreview.co.uk that their ultrafast 300Mbps (peak – shared capacity) capable 4G network upgrade, which will make use of the latest LTE-Advanced (Long Term Evolution) and Carrier Aggregation technology, is imminently due to exit its trial phase and go live.

Mobile operator Vodafone has joined EE to become the second 4G based Mobile Broadband provider to make use of the latest Carrier Aggregation (LTE-Advanced) technology, which from this month should deliver a significant Internet speed and modest coverage boost for customers in Birmingham, Manchester and London (assuming the user owns supporting hardware).

The Jersey (Channel Islands) based telecoms operator JT has managed to get a website and press advert for rival Sure Ltd. banned after the provider misleadingly promoted their pay monthly mobile tariffs as offering both “UNLIMITED” data and txt messages, which was despite the operator applying restrictions in its Fair Usage Policy (FUP).

A new study from Global Wireless Solutions has discovered what most UK rail commuters already knew, that Mobile Broadband connectivity on the train is more often than not a pile of poop. Indeed 30.3% of mobile Internet tasks and 1 in 7 voice calls attempted on commuter train routes failed during testing. But Vodafone and EE put in the best performance.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that customers of their ‘Red’ 4G (LTE) based mobile voice and Internet services in the United Kingdom will now also be able to make use of the same connectivity in 23 destinations worldwide.

UK Broadband Ltd (PCCW), which is the parent of London-based wireless broadband ISP Relish, has officially been granted an indefinite extension to its spectrum licence for use of 40MHz in the 3.4GHz band that is being used to help deliver 4G (LTE) based fixed wireless and mobile broadband services.

Sadly not all hotels offer a WiFi Internet service and some even charge excessive amounts for access, although in most of these cases it’s often possible to get your computer online by using a Smartphone to setup a personal WiFi hotspot via a Mobile Broadband link (3G, 4G). At least it is unless your hotel decides to deliberately block personal WiFi.

BT has denied that its plans to launch a new consumer focused 4G mobile service, which will also harness the capabilities of their existing WiFi hotspots, are at risk of delay due to a series of technical challenges with getting the new network to function properly.

Mobile network operator EE has started October 2014 by announcing that another batch of 18 towns across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England can now receive their “superfast” 4G (4GEE – LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband service, including Prince Harry’s old training grounds at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst.

The latest State of the Internet Q2-2014 report from Akamai has claimed that average world broadband Internet download speeds increased by an impressive 21% in Q2 to hit 4.6Mbps. By comparison the UK saw its performance jump by 12% to reach 11.1Mbps, making us the 16th fastest country (down from 15th in Q1); although our peak speeds rank a place higher.

The Government’s Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Sajid Javid, has today told the annual Conservative Party Conference that having better broadband Internet connectivity than the largest EU states is “never enough” and he wants the United Kingdom to “compete with the likes of Japan and South Korea“, where ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) networks are common.
