UPDATE UK Broadband Launch 65Mbps Fixed 4G Internet for London Homes

UK Broadband (UKB), the sibling of Hong Kong based telecoms giant PCCW (HKT), is today expected to take another pop at breaking into the consumer Internet access market when it launches a new fixed line and 4G (TD LTE) fixed wireless based “fibre-fast” broadband service for homes and businesses in London using its 3.5GHz or 3.6GHz radio spectrum bands.

Internet Video Streaming to Dominate Mobile Data Traffic by 2019

Telecoms giant Ericsson has today published its annual Mobility Report, which reveals that Internet video services will grow to account for more than 50% of mobile data traffic in 2019 (up from around 40% today) and 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband coverage in Europe will reach 80% (currently 25%) by the same year. But 4G uptake could struggle.

RootMetrics has published its latest biannual study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance across the city of London (England), which conducted 88,670 tests during March 2014 to reveal that EE still deliver the fastest download (17.8Mbps) and upload (9.3Mbps) speeds. But rivals O2, Three UK and Vodafone are improving.

Survey – Public WiFi Hurt by Security Fears and Fiddly Signup Forms

A new survey of 827 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that 63.3% of respondents would rather use Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) than a public WiFi hotspot (26.1%) to go online when out and about, while 10.5% said they don’t use either. Apparently the key reasons for this are due to fears over weak wifi security and the fiddly sign-up forms.

90,000 UK Homes Must Change TV Aerial to Help Mobile Broadband Grow

The national UK telecoms regulator has today launched several new consultations on its plan to release existing radio spectrum in the UHF 700MHz (Digital TV) frequency band so that faster Mobile Broadband (e.g. 4G and 5G) services can be launched in the same frequency by 2020 – 2022.

Mobile operator EE has announced that their “superfast” 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network will soon be expanded to cover 2,588 villages and small towns with populations under 10,000. Mobile operator Vodafone has announced the next batch of locations for their national roll-out of “ultrafast” 4G based Mobile Broadband connectivity, which is now live in 233 large towns and cities across the United Kingdom (we predict they’re currently able to reach around 40% of the UK).

O2 UK Moves Closer to Offering a Mobile Public Services Network

UK Mobile Virtual Network Operator OVIVO Pushed into Liquidation

Mobile operator OVIVO, which was supplied by Vodafone UK via Cognatel and recently shocked around 50k – 70k customers by suddenly closing its service, has now suffered the final nail in its coffin after officially entering liquidation. Unfortunately this means that subscribers who haven’t already got a refund now stand little hope of receiving one.

First 2G and 3G Mobile Services Go LIVE in the Chunnels North Tunnel

Eurotunnel has today confirmed that Le Shuttle and High Speed Train commuters travelling along the Channel Tunnel (North Tunnel) route, which links the UK to France, can now access 2G and 3G based mobile phone and mobile broadband connectivity via EE and Vodafone (O2 will soon follow) thanks to a new fibre optic based GSP-P retransmission system. 4G is coming soon.

Vodafone UK Launch 4G Mobile Broadband Roaming in 4 EU Countries

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that customers of their Red 4G plans (including business travellers) will now also be able to make use of “ultrafast” Mobile Broadband connectivity when roaming across Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Ofcom Publish UK Radio Spectrum Management Strategy and Interactive Map

The communications regulator has today set out its approach and priorities (e.g. future 5G mobile broadband) for managing and sharing (e.g. white space technology) the country’s radio spectrum up to the year 2025. As part of this, Ofcom has also published an Interactive Spectrum Map to show how different frequencies are used in the United Kingdom.

Samba’s Free Ad Supported UK Mobile Broadband Service Closes Down

Samba, a virtual mobile network operator that used the Three UK platform and which claimed to offer the country’s first free Mobile Broadband service, has suddenly closed down after first launching two years ago (here). Perhaps unsurprisingly the operators “unsustainable data costs” have taken the blame.

O2 Travel Adverts Banned for Omitting 15MB Mobile Internet Data Cap

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has once again had to ban two adverts for O2’s mobile Internet data roaming tariff (O2 Travel) after it claimed to offer “a day’s data for £1.99 … whatever you get up to on the continent“, which failed to mention the small matter of a 15MB usage cap.
