The latest Telecoms Market Data Tables Q3 2012 update from Ofcom has revealed that the United Kingdom is now home to a total of 21,371,000 fixed line broadband ISP connections (excludes corporate lines), which is up by +264,000 over the previous quarter and includes 639,000 superfast fibre broadband (FTTx) lines.

Mobile operator Three UK (Hutchison 3GUK Ltd.) has announced that their forthcoming 4G (LTE) based “ultrafast” Mobile Broadband network will, unlike its rivals, offer the service across all existing and new price plans “without customers needing to pay a premium fee to upgrade“.

As expected the UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to allow 4G (LTE) superfast Mobile Broadband services to also be delivered over the 900MHz, 1800MHz (EE are at present the only one allowed to do this) and 2100MHz radio spectrum bands that are currently used for a mix of existing 2G and 3G services.

BTOpenreach has announced plans to conduct a proof of concept trial for its new small cell based Mobile Infill Solution. The service aims to leverage BT’s existing fixed line UK telecoms network to provide mobile services into parts of the country that suffer from “non-existent or patchy” coverage (i.e. “rural areas“).

Filtronic, which produces microwave and millimetre-wave products for telecom firms, has signed a new contract to build “mitigation products” that will be used to help some of the 2.3 million UK homes that could suffer from a loss of Digital TV (Freeview) when the new 4G based Mobile Broadband services go live in the 800MHz band.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today opened the bidding process for its auction of 4G (LTE or WiMAX) superfast Mobile Broadband radio spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz). A total of seven firms are bidding, although the main focus will be on the four primary mobile phone operators.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has today launched a new SIM-Only Mobile Broadband plan for its most data hungry 4G “super-users” (this currently means fewer than 1% of their customers), which offers a healthy allowance of 20GB (GigaBytes) per month and comes with a special launch price.

A new Virgin Media Business commissioned YouGov study of 2,000 adults in the United Kingdom has revealed that 90% of people wouldn’t swap their Mobile Broadband operator based purely on the prospect of getting faster speeds from 4G (LTE). In fact price, reliability and coverage were deemed to be more important.

Netflix UK, the unlimited movies and TV subscription based video streaming service, has published its latest December 2012 rankings for broadband Internet Service Providers in the United Kingdom. The ratings reflect the average performance of all Netflix video streams on each ISP.

BT Retail has today announced the launch of its new SmartTalk (BTSmartTalk) app for Apple iPhone and Android mobiles. The app requires a wifi or Mobile Broadband connection and enables customers to make phone calls via their smartphone and have them billed under their existing home phone plan (whether in the UK or abroad).

The Open Rights Group (ORG) has accused Virgin Media’s mobile division (Virgin Mobile) and Orange UK (EE) of wrongfully blocking access to an online store for engraved gifts (Forever & Eternity) and then, in Virgin Mobile’s case, ignoring the owners requests to have the blanket internet censorship measure lifted.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a “misleading” leaflet and website promotion for JT’s (Jersey / Guernsey Telecom) new MyMobile plans, which both falsely claimed to offer “unlimited” texts and Mobile Broadband data. Separately Virgin Media failed in its effort to get a TalkTalk advert banned.
