The communications regulator has published its annual 2012 Infrastructure Report, which claims that “close to” 100% of premises in the United Kingdom can now receive a broadband service (71% take-up) and just 10% can only get sub-2Mbps speeds (down from 14% in 2011). Superfast broadband (25Mbps+) is also available to 65% of homes and businesses (7% take-up).

Ofcom has today begun to set out plans that will eventually enable the release of new airwaves (UHF radio spectrum), such as the controversial 700MHz and 600MHz band used by Digital TV services, which could be used by a future generation of 5G Mobile Broadband or WiFi style internet solutions. But it will be 2018 before anything happens.

The annual uSwitch.com Mobile Awards 2012, which took place this week in London’s Covent Garden (Circus) area, have named Three UK as the Best Mobile Network and the Fastest Network for 3G based Mobile Broadband speeds. The operator was also crowned as the best network for roaming.

Ofcom has today announced the final regulations, reserve prices and timetable for its imminent auction of superfast 4G (LTE or WiMAX) compatible Mobile Broadband spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz), which will officially get underway on 11th December 2012 with the first services to launch in May or June 2013.

The European Commission (EC) has called upon all EU member states, including the United Kingdom, to open up the 2GHz radio spectrum band (1920-1980MHz paired with 2110-2170MHz) for use by 4G (LTE) superfast mobile broadband services by 30th June 2014 “at the latest“.

Virgin Media’s mobile division, which is aptly called Virgin Mobile, has today announced the launch of a new tariff (Big Data and Texts) for its Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) customers that offers unlimited data and 300 texts for a top-up of just £10. But beware the expiry date.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today begun enforcing new guidelines that are designed to tackle misleading promotions of Mobile Broadband speed. The changes were first introduced earlier this year for fixed line ISPs (here) but have now also been extended to mobile operators.

The boss of UK business ISP Fluidata, Piers Daniell, has said that he is “somewhat underwhelmed” by the lower than hoped for Mobile Broadband speeds of EE’s new 4G (LTE) service and expressed similar disappointment about its low and “misjudged” usage allowances.

The Country Land and Business Association(CLA), which represents English and Welsh land owners and repeatedly calls for improvements to UK rural broadband coverage, has opposed a reform of the Electronic Communication Code (ECC) that could make it cheaper for Mobile Broadband operators to expand their availability.

Ofcom has today confirmed the successful completion of the UK’s switchover from the old Analogue TV to Digital Terrestrial Television (DTTV) signals, which paves the way for the next generation of 4G superfast Mobile Broadband (LTE) services to launch via the vacant 800MHz band.

The results from 749 respondents to ISPreview.co.uk’s latest reader poll found that just 15.3% would currently be willing to pay extra for a faster 4G based Mobile Broadband service, while the rest either said “no” (48%) or were simply undecided (36.5%). Mobile operator EE will launch the first national UK 4G service before the end of this month.

The UK’s primary Mobile Broadband operators have today setup a new company called Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited (formerly MitCo), which will work to ensure that 900,000 UK homes don’t lose Freeview Digital TV (DTV) services when the new 4G (LTE) products, via the 800MHz band, arrive next year.

The latest RootMetrics study of Mobile Broadband speeds has revealed that Three UK delivers the fastest connection in London (T-Mobile was the slowest), where the average download speed is 2.265Mbps (Megabits per second). But mobile speeds in New York were on average found to be four times faster (8.5Mbps).

Customers of O2 UK (GiffGaff, TescoMobile) have been hit by yet another major national outage of the operators Mobile Broadband and phone service, which began at around midday on Friday (12th Oct 2012). Roughly 10% of the providers subscribers have been unable to make or receive calls, send texts or use data.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has today announced that their new 4G (1800MHz) based mobile and separate fixed line superfast fibre broadband (FTTC) service will officially go live on 30th October 2012, which follows yesterday’s industry agreement to shift Ofcom’s related spectrum auction forward to spring 2013.
