Mobile operator Smarty, which is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) on Three UK’s platform, has recently launched a discount that offers their new SIM-Only plan with 100GB data (mobile broadband), unlimited calls and texts, EU roaming, “superfast” 5G and a 30-day term for just £12 per month.

Mobile operator Three UK this morning claims to have overtaken arch rival EE (BT) for population coverage of their new ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network, which they say can now reach 54% of the United Kingdom. By comparison, EE put their own figure at 50% on 10th May 2022 (here).

The City of London (CoL) is already home to a small cell based Wi-Fi and 4G network that claims to offer broadband speeds of up to 200Mbps across the Square Mile, but now Freshwave has been chosen to help deliver on the plan for a “city-wide deployment” that will push 5G coverage across the Square Mile by the end of 2022.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, have today proposed to update certain licences held by mobile operators Vodafone and O2 (VMO2) – including for the 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz and 2.6GHz bands. The move is designed to enable the deployment of newer technologies, such as ultrafast 5G broadband services, into the bands.

Ofcom’s latest Spring 2022 report into fixed broadband and mobile coverage has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 33% of the UK (up from 28% in Sept 2021), while 19.3 million homes (66%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 47%). Geographic 5G coverage has also improved.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has begun to trial a new “hyper-sensitive quantum antenna technology using excited atomic states,” which represents a new way of detecting radio waves that could find much weaker signals than conventional receivers and thus boost the capabilities of future 5G mobile (broadband) and IoT networks.

A new survey of over 4,000 businesses in England, which was conducted by the National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise (NICRE), has claimed that sub-standard infrastructure in rural areas – particularly the lack of quality broadband in many parts – is making it harder for businesses to be “resilient and bounce back from adversity“.

The BT Group has published their Q4 2021/22 results to March 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network grow by a record 752,000 premises in the quarter (up from +662K last quarter) to total 7.2 million. The operator also signed an FTTP co-provisioning deal with Sky Broadband.

Mobile operator Three UK has today become the latest provider – after Vodafone and EE – to announce that it aims to completely switch off their legacy 3G (mobile broadband) network by the end of 2024. The move will free up resources to allow Three to focus on improving the 4G experience and rolling out 5G to more parts of the UK.

Some customers on Three UK’s 5G based unlimited Home Broadband packages, specifically those who recently joined and received the latest ZTE MC801A based 5G Hub router (here), have been reporting problems with connectivity and significant falls in broadband speed. The issue appears to stem from a bugged firmware update.

Two investment groups – one including Neos Networks (bidding alongside Cellnex) and the other Virgin Media (bidding alongside Nokia and Jacobs) – have reportedly been approved to bid on the £1bn auction of 10,000 miles worth of Network Rail‘s trackside cable network. The winner could use this to improve gigabit broadband and 5G cover.

EE (BT) today claims to have become the first mobile operator to have expanded its ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) network to cover more than 50% of the UK’s population, which it added had been achieved “five years ahead of government’s ambition” – despite the challenge of needing to replace Huawei as a key supplier.

Mobile operator Three UK has begun offering new customers “up to” £250 cashback when you switch to their network, which will come in the form of a pre-paid Mastercard. The offer is available, until 7th July 2022, across both their top handset bundles and selected SIM Only mobile plans via their 4G and 5G network.

The UK telecoms regulator has today proposed to make a “large amount” of millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum available across the 26GHz and 40GHz bands for use by mobile technology, including 5G services. Such bands could help to deliver multi-gigabit mobile broadband speeds, but achieving good coverage is a costly obstacle.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Rural Powerhouse has today published a new report that warns “Rural Britain is not a museum” and is being “held back” by, among many other things, “slow” broadband connectivity and the need to urgently improve 4G and 5G mobile infrastructure.
