Ofcom UK Consult on Changes to Electronic Communications Code

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today launched a consultation on their proposals to update the Electronic Communications Code (ECC), which aims to introduce the government’s recent changes that are intended to make it easier for broadband and mobile networks to upgrade, share and deploy new infrastructure.

EE UK Extend 4G and 5G to West End London Underground Stations

Mobile operator EE (BT) has just announced that their ongoing deployment of a 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network on the London Underground – in partnership with Boldyn Networks and Nokia – has now reached the first West End stations, starting with Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road. Ofcom Summer 2023 Study – Full Fibre Broadband Covers 52% of UK

Ofcom’s summer 2023 study of UK fixed broadband and mobile coverage has reported that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 52% of the UK (up from 48% in Jan 2023), while 75% are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 73%) and 76-85% of premises can get an outdoor 5G signal from at least one operator (up from 73-82%).

Virgin Media O2 UK Reveals Plan to Switch Off 3G from 2025

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media / VMO2) has today become the final operator to reveal their plan for switching off the old 3G mobile (mobile broadband) network, which unlike their rivals is a process that won’t actually begin until 2025. The withdrawal will then occur in phases, with completion by the end of that same year.

Vodafone to Extend 5G Cover via Amazon’s Project Kuiper Satellites

Mobile operator Vodafone and Vodacom have today announced that they’ve agreed a “strategic collaboration” deal to harness Amazon’s future Project Kuiper constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) broadband satellites, which will be used to help extend the reach of their 4G and 5G networks across Europe and Africa.

Vodafone UK Starts Large Scale Build of OpenRAN to 2,500 Sites

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone has today moved out of the pilot phase for its new 4G and 5G capable Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) technology and begun their “volume deployment“, which aims to reach 2,500 sites across mostly rural parts of Wales and the South-West of England by 2027.

Virgin Media O2 UK Offers Free Airport Lounge Access to Delayed Travellers

5G Download Speeds Have Fallen in 9 out of 12 UK Regions

Internet benchmarking firm Ookla, which operates the popular broadband and mobile network performance testing service Speedtest.net, has revealed that 5G based mobile broadband download speeds have fallen across most regions of the UK over the past year. But despite this, overall data speeds (4G + 5G) have increased.

Mobile operator Vodafone has had a small refresh of their Basics plans, which are leaner versions of regular Pay Monthly tariffs that also impose some caps and bars to stop you being charged for extra features (e.g. MMS) or calls to premium rate numbers etc. (put another way, you can’t use those).

Ads Watchdog Bans EE’s Misleading No.1 UK 5G Network Claims

A series of complaints, most of which came from rivals Three UK and Vodafone, has prompted the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to investigate and ban several old adverts for EE’s mobile network over “misleading” promotions, which claimed that it was the “No.1” network for 5G.

BT FDD Trial Looks to Boost 5G Standalone Mobile Broadband Speeds

A new trial has just been conducted by UK telecoms giant BT (EE) and supplier Ericsson, which is claimed to be somewhat of a “European first” after it successfully demonstrated the transmission of Standalone 5G services in a wideband Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) radio carrier (over 20MHz) within a sub-3GHz spectrum band.
