Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has published further analysis of the £2bn acquisition of full fibre alternative UK broadband network Netomnia (Substantial Group) by the parents of nexfibre and Virgin Media (O2). The research highlights how much of a bearing a single piece of competition-law math – the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) – may have on the deal being cleared or not.

Wireless infrastructure provider Freshwave has deployed their 4G Distributed Antenna System (DAS) across the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, which can be used by any mobile network operator (EE, O2, or Vodafone / Three UK) to help staff, patients and visitors connect to a good mobile (mobile broadband) signal.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning announced that they’ve switched on their 500th “Giga Site” (located in North Elgin, Scotland), which reflects mobile sites that adopt the operator’s most advanced 5G technologies (e.g. 5G+, dual-band Massive MIMO etc.) to improve network coverage, mobile broadband speeds and capacity for customers.

Good news if you’re one of Sky Mobile’s most “most loyal customers” as the UK mobile operator has this morning promised to give you “free global roaming” across 120 destinations (this normally costs an extra £2 a day when abroad using Sky’s Roaming Passport Plus). But you’ll need to have been with Sky for quite a few years to benefit.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has confirmed that they’ve been chosenb y Cornwall Council in England to survey mobile network coverage and 4G / 5G data performance across the region, harnessing 7,250km of the county’s road network and testing all three of the primary mobile networks – EE, O2 and VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ve switched-on their next-generation 5G+ (5G Standalone) mobile broadband network across more of Oxfordshire in England, which is said to reach more than 450,000 residents across 495 towns, villages and hamlets.

Broadband and mobile operator VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) have today decided to complement Ofcom’s new anti-scam rules for telecoms providers (here) by publishing their first quarterly Scam Index, which among other things reveals that more than 18.5 million adults in the UK have been targeted by scammers in just three months.

The UK internet content, telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has this morning published a “comprehensive package of practical measures” to help UK mobile network operators “block, limit and disrupt scammers” from sending messaging scams. In addition, they’ve strengthened rules to help protect people from international calls that imitate – or “spoof” – UK mobile numbers.

Yesterday saw the UK Government sign one of its largest services-focused trade deals to date, this time with the beautifully mountainous Central European country of Switzerland, which among other things included an agreement to support surcharge-free international mobile roaming.

Remember when Openreach (BT) recently announced that it was going to give broadband ISPs on its network an extra £50 rebate for winning incremental new “full fibre” (FTTP) customers in areas where it competes with Virgin Media (here)? Well, the latter isn’t very happy, naturally, and has accused the incumbent of trying to “choke” off competition in the market.

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has today revealed that 50 publicly funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live in Scotland as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project – providing coverage from EE, O2 and VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK) across more than 1,900 sq km.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a cheeky email advert from broadband ISP Grain Connect, which headlined with a warning about Virgin Media “taking over YouFibre & BRSK“. But YouFibre successfully complained that the rest of the promotion had made “misleading price rise claims“.

The UK telecom regulator’s proposal in their Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR), which sought to adopt a different approach to copper line retirement in favour of full fibre optic (FTTP) broadband lines on Openreach’s national UK network, has, perhaps predictably, attracted criticism from rivals that worry it may hand the incumbent an advantage.

The SpeedGeo project, which compares internet connection quality by benchmarking the speeds of real users, has published their Q2 2026 results and once again named Virgin Media as the fastest fixed broadband ISP. At the same time they’ve also named Three UK as the fastest mobile broadband (4G, 5G) operator. But there are caveats.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has revealed that yesterday’s FIFA World Cup 2026 match between England and DR Congo (2 – 1) fuelled the “biggest mobile traffic event ever recorded” on their mobile network, which saw mobile data (broadband) traffic peak 20.38% higher than the prior peak (during the Arsenal vs PSG UEFA Champions League Final) and 27.67% above a comparable pre-tournament week. EE (BT) reported similar.
