Mobile operator O2 UK (BE Broadband), which is owned by Spanish multinational Telefonica, has today confirmed that their struggling fixed line Home Broadband and Home Phone service is to be taken over by arch rival BSkyB (Sky Broadband) for a consideration of £180 million.

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (BE Broadband) has suffered another painful quarter after their latest results for Q4-2012 showed that its fixed line home broadband subscriber base had fallen by -19,400 in the quarter to reach a new total of 560,100 customers. Meanwhile rumours of a sale to BSkyB continue to persist.

The director of business ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, has criticised the O2 Wholesale (BE Broadband) back-haul capacity offered through Fluidata because of “congestion issues” that have been “going on for a while“; some of which is spill-over from heavy use on O2/BE’s “unlimited” consumer services.

Customers of ISP O2 UK (BE Broadband) have this week begun to receive the first 250 of just under 1,000 initial internet piracy threat letters from Golden Eye International (GEIL), which targets internet users whom are suspected of having “illegally” shared (P2P) copyright content that belongs to the Ben Dover porn brand.

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK has confirmed that anybody who signs-up with one of their top two “unlimited” Home Broadband packages will get both 6 months of free service (3 months free for non-o2 mobile users) and also three Kinect compatible XBox 360 games (Nike+ Kinect, Forza Horizon and Nat Geo Kinect TV).

The Open Rights Group (ORG) has today failed in its Court of Appeal bid to block Golden Eye International (GEIL), a firm that holds numerous copyrights for adult films (e.g. Ben Dover), from potentially sending thousands more internet piracy settlement letters to customers of UK ISP O2 (BE Broadband).

Internet provider BE Broadband has been forced to apologise after the ISPs parent operator O2 “mistakenly” bombarded some of their UK customers with an unsolicited email advert (SPAM) for a Christmas mobile phone deal.

The Open Rights Group (ORG) has applied for permission to intervene in a court case between Golden Eye International, which holds the copyrights for various adult films (Ben Dover), and O2 UK. The move could potentially help to stop up to 6,000 of the ISPs customers receiving dubious internet piracy claim letters.

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (BE Broadband) has released its latest financial results to the end of September (Q3-2012), which revealed yet another fall in their fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base to 579,500 (down by -22,500 in the quarter). This is even worse than the -15,800 lost during Q2-2012.

It took longer than most but O2 (BE Broadband) has now finally implemented a network-wide block (censorship) that prevents its customers from accessing the NewzBin2 (NewzBin) website, which London’s High Court last year deemed to be responsible for facilitating internet piracy (copyright infringement).

Customers of O2 UK (GiffGaff, TescoMobile) have been hit by yet another major national outage of the operators Mobile Broadband and phone service, which began at around midday on Friday (12th Oct 2012). Roughly 10% of the providers subscribers have been unable to make or receive calls, send texts or use data.

Mobile operators O2 (Telefonica) and Vodafone have been given the green light to merge their UK based 2G, 3G and future 4G (LTE) platforms through a new network sharing agreement that will also lay the foundations for 98% population coverage by the end of 2015 (two years ahead of Ofcom’s 2017 deadline).
