UPD Sky Broadband Criticise BT Openreach UK for Consistently Poor Service

BTOpenreach, which is responsible for maintaining BT’s national UK network, has said that it’s always “working to improve” its service after at least two ISPs – Sky Broadband (BSkyB) and TalkTalk – both criticised their service quality ahead of Ofcom’s on-going review of the fixed telecoms market.

Ofcom has today published the results of a year-long study, which was conducted by Kantar Media, into how and why Internet users access music, films, TV shows, software, books and video games online (both legally and illegally). It found that 17% of Internet users infringed copyright online but only 2% were responsible for 74% all piracy by volume.

The telecoms regulator has today published its latest Telecoms Market Data Tables Q1-2013 update and revealed that the United Kingdom is now home to 21,890,000 fixed line broadband ISP connections (excludes corporate lines), which is up by +210,000 in the quarter (lower than the +356,000 added in Q4-2012).

The little known Internet provider Etico Solutions, which is based at the same address as long defunct ISPs EurISP and Aspire Internet (related news here and here), has escaped punishment from Ofcom after the regulator opened an investigation into their alleged failure to supply customers with a broadband migration code upon request.

Softer Blow for BT as Ofcom UK Revise its Wholesale Broadband Price Cuts

The UK telecoms regulator has today issued a correction to its original July 2013 proposal (here) that would force BT into reducing the cost of their fixed line wholesale broadband services (WLR, SMPF, MPF) to ISPs. The changes represent only a small price difference of a few pence to a few pounds but then the original proposal wasn’t huge either.

EE UK to Increase Standard Home Broadband Speeds up to 16Mbps

Ofcom has published its latest biannual report into the real-world performance of fixed line broadband ISP speeds in the United Kingdom, which found that the average internet download rate had climbed to 14.7Mbps (Megabits per second) and that’s up from 12Mbps six months earlier (+22%). But rural areas continue to suffer from slow speeds.

Ofcom UK Refuse BT Call for Interim Measures to Secure Sky Sports TV
