The Welsh Government has today celebrated the success of a community project, which with a little help from public subsidy (vouchers) and local volunteers has managed to build their own 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to homes in the rural village Michaelston y Fedw.

The Institute of Directors, which represents roughly 35,000 business leaders and directors, has proposed that one way to boost the national UK rollout of fibre optic broadband services would be for Openreach (BT) to abolish the access costs for ISPs seeking to tap into their network infrastructure.

The UK Minister of State for Digital, Margot James MP, yesterday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a Gigabit “full fibre” (FTTP) future and also called on ISPs to “pass on [the] benefit” from Ofcom’s recent wholesale market reviews in order to improve the take-up of “superfast broadband.”

The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) and National Farmers Union (NFU) have today updated their existing wayleave framework for ISPs, which was first agreed in 2013 (here) and has now been revised to help “speed up rural broadband roll-out” and reflect recent changes in UK law.

Ofcom has today formally invited UK ISPs to express their interest in becoming suppliers for the new Universal Service Obligation (USO), which from 2020 will make it possible for anybody in a slow speed area to request a minimum broadband download speed of 10Mbps+ (1Mbps upload).

The European Parliament will tomorrow vote on a reformed Copyright Directive, which among other things features provisions mandating online platforms to install automated upload filters that many fear could result in significant “over-blocking” of lawful content (censorship) and restrictions on news linking.

New information suggests that around £56m from the proposed £383.4m North Wales Growth Bid could be invested (over a period of between 5 to 15 years) in order to help expand the availability of Gigabit and “ultrafast” capable “full fibre” (FTTP) style broadband networks in the country’s northern half.

The Mayor of London UK, Sadiq Khan, has published a new roadmap that aims to build the “smartest city in the world” and to improve its digital connectivity. Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media has taken the unusual decision to sue Durham County Council (England) in the hope that doing so will enable them to lay new fibre optic cable along grass verges and without having to pay “hefty” fees per metre. The case will test the recently revised Electronic Communications Code (ECC).

The European Commission has approved a new Electronic Communications Code (ECC) that could boost investment in “full fibre” (FTTP/H) and 5G mobile. At the same time a new report from the European Court of Auditors confirms that their original target for “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) take-up will be missed.

The House of Lords was yesterday given the opportunity to debate the Government’s new 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for fixed line broadband (implemented from 2020). Perhaps unsurprisingly they trashed it, while also calling for a “more ambitious” minimum speed of 30Mbps.

Network builder Cityfibre and UK ISP MLL Telecom have opened up their new 24km long Gigabit fibre optic broadband and Ethernet infrastructure to local businesses in the city of Stirling (Scotland). The network has been live since last year (here) but initially it was only open to public sector sites (Public Service Network).
