Last week’s entirely unsurprising decision by the Government to drop a proposed 30Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, in favour of the originally proposed 10Mbps, has not gone down well with either the opposition Labour Party or SNP. Both have branded it a “missed opportunity.”

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has today published a new report that makes 23 recommendations to help the Government roll-out future 5G Mobile services from 2020 and achieve “reliable universal coverage” of the United Kingdom by 2025. Easier said than done.

The Digital Economy Bill 2017 has today effectively been approved by both houses of parliament, which means positive changes for UK broadband connectivity (10Mbps USO, compensation etc.). On the other hand the internet faces more censorship and a proposed 30Mbps USO was dropped.

The FTTH Council Europe has revised downward last year’s Comsof estimate for the cost of deploying ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) based broadband networks across the EU (currently this still includes the UK) by 2025, which makes it €137 billion (£116bn) instead of €156bn (£132bn).

The MP for Warrington North (Cheshire, England), Helen Jones, has claimed that many residents in the area should be paid a total of £246,000 in compensation by ISPs because of the slow broadband speeds that local homes are alleged to endure. She wants Ofcom to take action.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed that some 9,877 new housing developments, totalling more than 240,000 new premises across the United Kingdom, are so far set to benefit from new contracts that offer a “free” deployment of ultrafast 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) technology.

A new survey of 1,465 business people from all regions of the UK, which was conducted by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), has claimed that 18% suffer from unreliable Internet connections and firms in rural areas are “at least twice as likely to have unreliable connections” (30%).

Ofcom has published a Draft Code of Practice to support the Government’s proposed reforms to the Electronic Communications Code (ECC), which aim to make it easier and cheaper for network operators to roll-out new broadband and telecoms infrastructure (masts, cables etc.) on public and private land.
