Internet benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published their “definitive” 2024 Fixed Broadband Experience report, which gauges the performance of various internet service providers across the UK and then separately across 12 of its regions (inc. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Overall, Virgin Media came top in the national scores, but the regional results are different.

Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky Mobile etc.) has today announced the launch of their new entry-level Essential TV package, which includes some premium channels and also brings those together with Netflix and discovery+ content from just £15 per month. This is available via their internet-based Sky Stream and Sky Glass platforms.

Sky (Sky Mobile, Sky Broadband etc.) has today warned the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that they could launch a legal challenge (appeal) if the proposed merger between mobile network operators Vodafone and Three UK is allowed to proceed, unless significant changes are made to the proposed competition remedies.

The UK Government’s Telecoms Minister, Sir Chris Bryant, has today announced that he’s agreed a new ‘Telecare National Action Plan‘ with major UK broadband and phone providers (e.g. BT, Virgin Media, Vodafone and Sky Broadband), which requires them to do more to protect vulnerable telecare users when upgrading phone lines to new digital (IP based) networks.

Customers of Sky (Sky TV, Sky Broadband etc.) may like to know that the media giant has today announced an extension of their long-term collaboration with Amazon, which will see ‘Prime Video’ apps and related content continue to be available on Sky devices (e.g. Sky Q, Sky Glass, Sky Stream etc.).

Ofcom has published their latest Q2 2024 study of UK consumer complaints, which names and shames NOW Broadband (NOW TV) for being the worst provider by attracting the most complaints about broadband, while EE did the same for landline phone and O2 took most flak mobile. Finally, both EE and Virgin Media were jointly on the naughty step for Pay TV.

Sky Mobile (Sky Broadband) has today kicked off their Black Friday discounts too, which cuts the price of their Pay Monthly SIM plans by 50% for the first 6 months of service for new customers (e.g. their 5GB + unlimited calls/texts plan is now £5 per month instead of £10). But this excludes their entry-level 100MB and premium unlimited data plans.

Some customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband, usually including those who have just had a new Full Fibre (FTTP) package installed and are using Sky’s latest Max Hub router, appear to be struggling to get their new IP-based phone (Sky Talk) service activated after installation – a situation that can sometimes persist for several weeks. But a fix is on the way.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve extended and expanded their strategic partnership Sky UK, which among other things means that Sky Stream will launch in EE retail stores, via the their website, and telesales from 15th October 2024; it can also now be taken alongside EE’s home broadband and mobile services.

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband’s phone (Sky Talk) and Sky Mobile service, including those with a phone service via NOW Broadband (NOW TV), have – due to the current conflict – been given the ability to make free calls and texts between the UK (inc. Ireland) and Lebanon until the end of 2024.

UK ISP Sky Broadband today claims to have become “the UK’s only major provider” to launch a “dedicated 24/7 switching support service” for consumers moving to their service, which they say means “customers can get through to a real person with any questions about switching their broadband, day or night.”

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a website ad for Sky’s broadband ISP and subscription-based TV streaming sub-brand, NOW TV (NOW Broadband), after it failed to make clear the “significant conditions” of its free trials, which would automatically auto-renew at a fee.

In a rather unusual service outage, some of Sky UK’s customers are suffering from a serious and ongoing issue that is preventing them from being able to switch-on their broadband-based Sky Glass and Sky Stream pay TV streaming devices. We can’t say we’ve ever heard of many issues quite like this one before, but hopefully the devices can be remotely recovered.

The UK Government’s Minister for Telecoms, Sir Chris Bryant, has written a new letter to the bosses of major broadband ISPs that calls on them to help protect vulnerable users during the switchover from analogue (PSTN) to digital (IP) phone solutions by refraining from re-starting non-voluntary migrations and offering battery backup that can last “up to” 8 hours.

Broadband ISP Sky Business (Sky UK) has today announced that they’ve signed a new long-term agreement that will enable them to sell packages to businesses over the new full fibre network being built by the ITS Technology Group, which operates wholesale full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks (“Faster Britain“) across urban parts of the UK.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today acknowledge that their already much delayed new One Touch Switch (OTS) system for faster consumer broadband ISP migrations won’t be 100% ready for launch on 12th September 2024. But rather than delay it, again, they’ve instead ordered providers to retain the old system for a further 6 weeks.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has confirmed that they will, from today, be temporarily “phasing out” their old satellite-based Sky Q Triple Play packages, which means they’re “no longer available for purchase on Sky.com“. Existing customers will continue to be supported. Sky’s focus is on their newest internet-based streaming products.
