Rural homes and businesses around the Norwood Park area of Somerset (England), specifically those connected to the local network run by UK ISP Voneus, lost their internet connection over the weekend after a group of “misguided 5G protestors” damaged broadband equipment while mistaking it for a mobile mast.

Alternative UK network ISP Jurassic Fibre, which at the end of last year announced that their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network would be deploying across the Somerset market town of Bridgwater (here), may soon face off against a new deployment from rival operator Virgin Media in the same location.

Blandford-based ISP Wessex Internet, which has built its own Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband networks across rural parts of Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire and Wiltshire, has today launched a refresh of its brand with both a new logo and website to support the change.

Fixed wireless and full fibre broadband ISP Voneus, which is now targeting future expansion into a potentially addressable market of 1.6 million UK homes (up from 900,000 previously), has announced that Macquarie Capital are increasing their ownership stake in the business and thus boosting their FTTP rollout.

Full Fibre Limited, which is currently building a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to cover “at least” 500,000 UK premises by 2025, has today named the next batch of 11 rural and semi-urban towns to benefit from their rollout (reflecting a coverage increase of c.100,000 premises).

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme has today issued a progress update on their new Phase 2 contracts with ISPs Airband, Wessex Internet and Truespeed, which are worth a combined £80m (including £23.6m of public investment) and aim to improve broadband coverage to 56,396 premises (mostly rural areas).

Full fibre ISP Truespeed, which has been deploying a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across rural areas in South West England, has announced that the city of Bath in Somerset (including surrounding areas) will be the next major area to benefit from the rollout of their new network.

A new Bath-based network operator called Brsk Limited has just cropped up with tentative plans to deploy a new “open access” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to UK homes and businesses, albeit initially starting in the “north of England” rather than the south, where it’s based.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset team will be hoping that the third time is a charm after they awarded £80m worth of contracts for Phase 2 of their delayed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) rollout project, which sees 6 LOTS being split between three suppliers (Airband, Truespeed and Wessex Internet).
