Jurassic Fibre Extend Gigabit Broadband to the Sidmouth Area

Alternative UK network ISP Jurassic Fibre, which is deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across parts of Somerset, Devon and Dorset (here), has finally confirmed that their next rollout location will be the coastal town of Sidmouth and its surrounding villages.

The addition of Sidmouth to their plan shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to ISPreview.co.uk’s readership, as we first spotted their engineers conducting surveys in the area during early March (here). On top of that, the provider’s CEO, Michael Maltby, lives in the same town and that’s a pretty good incentive to build.

So far, the company has already started to connect towns and villages across Devon and Somerset, including Exmouth, Sowton, Honiton, Barnstaple and Bridgwater. Further locations are expected to go live in the coming months.

Construction in Sidmouth is “due to commence shortly” and the ISP has confirmed that it will also extend to the nearby villages of Sidbury, Weston, Salcombe Regis and Branscombe.

Michael Maltby, CEO and Founder of Jurassic Fibre, said:

“As a local resident of Sidmouth, announcing the start of our build in Sidmouth is a milestone for Jurassic Fibre. I set up Jurassic in 2018 after years of frustration over the quality of the local internet, which was doubly frustrating having worked on building fibre networks around the world.

The aim was simple: to provide the digital plumbing the region needs to thrive in the 21st century and secure Sidmouth and the South West’s position as the best place to live, work and relax in the United Kingdom.”

The provider is being supported by a £250m commitment from Fern Trading Limited, which supports their ambition to cover 350,000 premises across South West England by the end of 2024 (here and here).

Customers typically pay from £25 per month for an unlimited 30Mbps (10Mbps upload) package and that goes up to £95 for their top 950Mbps (200Mbps upload) tier on a monthly rolling contract. Standard installation is free, and their business plans offer speeds of up to 10Gbps.

I’m told that they’re also digging the road up in Teignmouth, Devon (just down the end of the road my dad lives on). It might be because the town council offices are in that area along with a few other businesses.

I also noticed one of their vans parked round the corner from my house in Torquay yesterday with a load of conduit, I’m assuming though that one of their staff must live near me (we’ve already had Virgin installed in 2019 and BT FTTP in late 2020, but I guess it could be like busses and 3 providers come along almost at once :-D).

They were surveying the town 2 weeks ago Rob. I spoke to a pair of lads wresting with a manhole cover. As OR have Teignmouth in their Rural & Market Town FTTP plan & are busy in the town clearing ducts right now along the route that their spine follows up the hill Jurassic will likely share fibre/ducts with OR.

So another no bus > 2 buses situation may be imminent-ish. I campaigned for FTTC in the town as we were a not-spot and have pestered OR and the dreadful CDS for FTTP too.

Unless Jurassic provide a router that can be properly configured it won’t interest me, I understand the current device can’t even be put into Bridge mode other than by Jurassic themselves.

      @Mark

Yeah you can’t change the router config yourself. Not even the SSID, gotta speak to them for anything, so yes changing to bridge mode will involve a call.

Meanwhile TrueSpeed connected up a yogurt factory the other day….

Not a lot of news on the Truespeed website, what are they up to?

You can’t trust Jurassic fibre. Prices are insane. I received a call from them to register long time ago. Now it’s been over 6 months. I still cannot get connected because construction workers never finished the job. Speeds not symmetrical unacceptable it shows how money hungry they are. You can easily get the same speeds from Talktalk much cheaper on ancient copper cables. True FTTP gives you 100mbps/100mbps not 100mbps/25mbps upload. I’ll not be joining them anymore. Even if it’s the only FTTP money hungry provider in my area.

They’re a farce at the best of times.

They’re also arrogant and believe customers are fundamentally all happy. They obviously don’t read the forums and Facebook groups in the areas they’ve half heartedly rolled out in and they’re ultimately expensive for a half baked network
