The Worcestershire County Council (WCC) in England has revealed the results of a recent study they conducted with Streetwave, which harnessed local bin lorries to map the coverage and performance of 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) networks across the county. Overall, it claims to have found that mobile coverage is “over 1,000 times worse than Ofcom and mobile operator data suggests“.

The Government’s executive Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has today published fresh data that reveals the current levels of broadband connectivity, future commercial plans for gigabit broadband, and any premises included in BDUK’s publicly funded interventions (e.g gigabit vouchers and Project Gigabit contracts) down to the individual premises (UPRN) level.

As hinted last week (here), network analyst firm Streetwave has confirmed that they’ve won yet another contract to map 4G and 5G based mobile broadband coverage using bin lorries, which will this time focus on the Liverpool City Region in Merseyside (England) and some 7,000km of the UK’s road network.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has posted a final evaluation of the previous ‘Superfast Broadband Programme’ (UK National Broadband Scheme), which reveals the various “economic, social, and environmental benefits” from the previous project to extend “superfast” (30Mbps+) coverage – run between 2016 and 2022.

A number of mobile operators, including O2 and EE, have already set out tentative plans for phasing-out existing 2G mobile services. But new data supplied by rural connectivity provider Wavemobile suggests that quite a few connections are still 2G-only, and thus closing the service will be more complex than the prior 3G switch-off.

New research from Broadband Genie, which surveyed 3,200 people across the UK, claims to have identified the best and worst cities, as well as internet providers, for broadband reliability. Overall, Gloucester was named as the best UK city for reliability (only 8% experienced outages last year), while Belfast (51%) was the worst.

New research from SignalTracker, which runs a popular Android mobile app (but not iOS) for monitoring and examining mobile phone reception, appears to show that although your handset may say 5G, it frequently only has a 4G connection. In UK samples, when the 5G icon was displaying, 38% of tests were in fact found to be a 4G connection.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has revealed that they’ve won another contract, this time via the Derbyshire County Council (DCC) in England, to map 4G and 5G mobile broadband coverage across another 10,000km of the UK’s road network in the East Midlands of England, using bin lorries.

Internet connection benchmarking firm Ookla, which operates the popular Speedtest.net broadband and mobile testing service, has published an interesting new study that looks at the adoption of different WiFi standards and performance across the world. But the study also highlights the performance impact of EE’s (BT) new Wi-Fi 7 capable routers in the UK.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has come top in a new network benchmarking study of 4G and 5G (broadband and calls) performance across London, which was conducted by the Berlin-based NET CHECK organisation and saw them score the highest number of ranking points (932.83 out of a possible 1,000 points).

The Q4 2024 Global Call Threat Report from Hiya, which works with broadband ISPs and mobile operators (BT, EE, O2, Virgin Media etc.) to help tackle SPAM and fraud calls, has revealed that UK residents received 4 spam calls per person each month (unchanged from Q3) and the percentage of unknown calls that are spam hit 32% (up from 28%).

Network testing and benchmarking firm MedUX has today previewed a new study, which examined the performance and quality of 5G (mobile broadband) networks from EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK across London. Sadly the results, which also tested 14 other major European cities, put the UK’s capital at the very bottom of the table.

Network testing firm Ookla (i.e. Speedtest.net, Downdetector.co.uk) has today published an interesting new report that examines the adoption and performance of 5G Standalone (5GSA) based mobile broadband networks across the UK and Europe. This also compares the new technology against existing Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G networks.

The latest Q4 2024 results from Virgin Media and O2 have been published, which saw their fixed broadband base grow by +12,000 in the quarter (vs 16.2k in Q3) to total 5,738,900. The provider’s full fibre (FTTP) network also built to another 485,500 premises, primarily via nexfibre (up from 281k in Q3), while mobile connections grew to total 45.7 million.

A new study from comparison site Go.Compare, which used data gathered from YouGov (survey of 2,000 UK residents) and the ONS, has claimed that more than 3.9 million UK households were owed compensation for broadband issues in the last year. But take that figure with a big pinch of salt.

Wireless infrastructure provider Freshwave, which is backed by investment firm DigitalBridge and naturally has its own vested interests in this field, have published a new study that claims a focus on improving indoor mobile (4G, 5G etc.) signals and “eliminating mobile dead zones” could help to grow the UK economy by £70bn a year.

Ofcom have today published their Q3 2024 study of UK consumer telecoms complaints, which names and shames TalkTalk for attracting the most complaints about broadband, while O2 took the most flak mobile and Virgin Media was put on the naughty step for Pay TV.
