UK Tops New G7 Focused Digital Connectivity Readiness Index

Technical consultancy firm FarrPoint has today published their first International Digital Connectivity Readiness Index (IDCRI), which ranks the United Kingdom top against the G7 nations. The index ranks countries by the quality and coverage of their digital infrastructure (broadband, 5G etc.), as well as other areas like digital skills and online security etc.

Telecoms Industry Commands 39% of Searches for UK Digging Work

The LSBUD (Line Search Before You Dig) organisation, which offers an online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms for underground pipes and cables, has published their annual Digging Up Britain 2024 report and revealed that telecoms remains the “most active industry” when it comes to searching before digging (39% of searches).

The latest H1 2024 data from caller ID verification firm Hiya, which also works with broadband ISPs BT (EE) and Virgin Media (O2) to help detect and block SPAM and fraud calls, has revealed that residents of the UK received only 3 spam calls per person each month (down from 4 at the same time last year) – one of the lowest rates in Europe.

Mobile UK Claim Half of People Would Welcome Mobile Mast on their Street

A new survey of over 1,000 adults conducted by industry trade body Mobile UK, which represents mobile operators Three UK, EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media) and Vodafone, has claimed that 51% of respondents are not bothered or would welcome a new mobile mast on their street to help improve service performance and reliability.

The Top 71 Slowest and Fastest UK Cities for Broadband Speed

A new analysis of 149,187 consumer broadband ISP speed tests claims to have identified the top fastest and slowest cities across the United Kingdom. For example, Canterbury (22Mbps) in Kent is named as the slowest city for the second consecutive year, while the fastest was found to be Lichfield (359Mbps) in Staffordshire.

World Broadband Lines Top 1.45bn as UK Full Fibre Grows 7.2% in Q1 2024

The latest research from Point Topic has revealed that global fixed broadband lines grew by 1.22% (17.55 million) in Q1 2024 (down from 1.6% in Q3 2023) to end the quarter on a total of 1.45 billion connections. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK jumped to 7.2% (up from 1.5% in Q3).

Survey Claims 71% of UK Broadband Users Find Changing ISP Tedious UPDATE

A new survey of over 1,000 adults across the UK, which was conducted by research and consulting firm Cavell, claims to have found that the majority of UK consumers (71%) still find the process of changing broadband ISP to be frustrating, complicated or intimidating. Just 28% said they found it “easy“.

EE also “edged past” Three UK to deliver the “best 5G experience“.

A new Strand Partners survey of 4,000 members of the UK public, which was commissioned by broadband and mobile providers Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2), has claimed that over a third of rural residents (or 66% of “young people“) are likely to be considering a move away to a town or city in the next 12 months. Poor internet connectivity is one of the key drivers for this.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today given UK phone providers (fixed line and mobile) six months to implement changes that aim to help tackle scammers who call from abroad and imitate UK landline numbers (i.e. spoofed calls), which requires stricter measures against “Presentation Numbers” that are used to identify who is making a call.

Sky UK Reveals Broadband Traffic, TV and Mobile Network Usage Stats

Comcast-owned internet, TV and mobile provider Sky UK has published an interesting new report, which reveals a lot of new details about their network and TV usage, which we haven’t previously seen. For example, ISP Sky Broadband now has 1.5 million FTTP customers and internet traffic peaked at 24.35Tbps on 9th April 2024.

Virgin Media O2 See UK Broadband Users Fall to 5.71 Million as Nexfibre Ramps FTTP

The latest Q2 2024 results from Virgin Media (O2) have today been published, which reveals that they’re now home to 5,710,700 fixed broadband customers (down by -12.2k in Q2 2024 vs +5.3k in Q1) and built another 295,300 full fibre (FTTP) premises – mostly via nexfibre (up from 194k last quarter). Both VM and nexfibre now cover 5m premises via full fibre.

Which? Name ISP Virgin Media as Worst UK Telecoms Provider for 2024 UPDATE

Consumer magazine Which? have today named the winners of their annual Shoddy Awards 2024, which lists the companies that have done poorly through the year. Suffice to say that broadband provider Virgin Media picked up the award for “Worst Telecoms Company” due to “poor customer service and mid-contract price hikes“.

Ofcom has published their latest quarterly (Q1 2024) study of UK consumer complaints, which saw NOW Broadband (NOW TV) being labelled as the worst provider for attracting the most gripes about broadband and landline phone, while Virgin Media did the same for pay TV services and O2 were the worst for Mobile.
