The UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, has proposed to make a few changes to their ‘Treating Vulnerable Customers Fairly‘ guide, which aims to help the 1.1 million households (5%) that are estimated to still be struggling to afford their broadband and phone (this rises to around 1 in 10 among the lowest-income households).

Mobile operator Three UK has today revealed that the average 4G and 5G data usage (mobile broadband), per customer, per month on their network jumped to 19GB (GigaBytes) in Dec 2021, which is up from 15.8GB a year ago. Ookla (Speedtest.net) also found that they delivered the fastest 5G download speeds in Q3-Q4 2021.

A new Uswitch (Opinium) survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was conducted last October 2021, has estimated that there are now 22 million “redundant” broadband ISP routers sitting in British homes, while 76% of respondents want a “universal router” (i.e. one that can be used by any ISP) to help cut e-waste.

Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service, has today published their latest Q4 2021 report into the internet download, upload and latency speeds for UK customers on SpaceX’s new Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellites.

New data from crowdsourced mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has compared how the 4G and 5G based UK mobile broadband download and upload speeds compared across Apple’s various iPhone generations (up to the iPhone 13). Unsurprisingly, the latest 5G equipped iPhone 12 and 13 delivered significantly faster performance.

A new survey of 2,000 UK adults has estimated that around 6.95 million households are now out of contract with their current home broadband ISP, which they claim means that all of those customers could be “overpaying” by an average of £162 when out-of-contract (collective total of around £1 billion).

The 2022 Internet Accessibility Index has just been published by comparison site Broadband Choices, which ranks 164 countries and territories on the quality of their broadband and mobile infrastructure to find the world’s most connected countries. Overall, the United Kingdom managed to jump from 6th to 4th place this year.

Last year the national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, estimated that 44.6 million UK people may have received scam calls and text messages during just the three months of summer (here), with 2% of recipients being duped by them. In response, the regulator has today proposed changes to tackle the use of fake phone numbers.

Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their combined results for Q4 2021, which finally confirmed their long-awaited plan to extend the operator’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover around 23 million UK premises by 2027 (7 million more than today) via a new Joint Venture.

A new study from crowdsourced mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has examined how mobile broadband download speeds have changed, across 100 countries, since 5G networks were introduced. For example, average 4G and 5G download speeds in the UK were 39.7Mbps at the end of 2021, up from 21.7Mbps at the start of 2019.

Ofcom has published their latest report on the availability and take-up of cheaper broadband social tariffs from UK ISPs, which finds that – out of an estimated 4.2 million households in receipt of Universal Credit – just 55,000 homes have taken such a package (1.2% of those eligible). The regulator calls on all providers to do more.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents UK alternative broadband ISP networks, has called on AltNets to help it by participating in a new survey assessing the development of the country’s independent networks.

Mobile testing firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has today published a new H2 2021 summary of 5G based mobile broadband performance and availability across the United Kingdom, which reveals how each of the primary network operators – EE (BT), Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (VMO2) – performed across 16 of the biggest metro cities.

Ofcom has today published their latest Q3 2021 (calendar) consumer complaints study, which identified both TalkTalk and Shell Energy as the providers that attracted the most gripes for fixed broadband services, while TalkTalk also took flak for landline phone services and iD Mobile came top for Mobile moans.

The High Court has ordered six of the UK’s largest broadband ISPs – Sky Broadband, BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and EE – to block customers from accessing a website called Mixdrop, which is described as a “cyberlocker” that facilitated internet piracy (copyright infringement) by allowing users to stream or download TV and film content.

Gigabit-broadband builder G.Network, which is busy investing £1bn to deploy a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across London and beyond (here), has today become the latest in a small group of UK ISPs to launch a cheaper social tariff (‘Essential Fibre‘) that is aimed at “Londoners on lower incomes“.

The BT Group has published their Q3 2021/22 results, which saw Openreach expand the coverage of gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to 6.44 million UK premises (up by +662K vs +615K in Q2) and BT enter into “exclusive discussions” with Discovery to create a 50:50 joint venture with BTSport and Eurosport UK.
