A new survey of over 2,000 UK adults, which was carried out four times over the past year by YouGov on behalf of Point Topic, has found that respondents who bundled their broadband ISP connection with a TV product has increased by 8% year-on-year (i.e. starting at 35% in Q2 2022 and rising to 43% in Q2 2023).

New data from mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has revealed that the gradual, and not always particularly smooth, adoption of Embedded Subscriber Identity Modules (eSIM) by UK mobile network operators and related Smartphones is starting to deliver a clear and significant improvement in consumer switching.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have published their Q2 2023 results, which saw their fixed broadband base fall by -15,300 in the quarter to total 5,667,300 (vs 28.8k added in Q1) and the operator confirm earlier reports (here) of 2,000 job cuts. But they also accelerated their nextfibre FTTP reach by 175,500 premises.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has published their latest biannual H1 2023 study of UK mobile network (4G and 5G) and mobile broadband performance, which sees EE (BT) continue to pick up awards across all of the categories. But in terms of 5G data speeds, Three UK remains the operator to beat.

CityFibre, which is rolling out a 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the UK, has published their annual accounts to the end of 2022 and revealed that their losses nearly doubled. But their network coverage also doubled to 2.2 million homes (RFS) and live consumer connections surged to 174k (up from 61k).

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has revealed that 532,651 tennis-fans attended The Championships 2023 and tracking shows that over 64 TeraBytes (up by 36.5% from 2022) of mobile broadband data were consumed by Wimbledon-goers during the two-week tournament, which was also one of their first roll-outs of 5G Standalone tech.

Ofcom has published its 2023 Mobile Matters report, which uses Opensignal’s crowdsourced data (collected between 1st October 2022 and 31st March 2023) to benchmark the performance of UK mobile data (mobile broadband) networks by both technology (3G, 4G and 5G) and operator choice – including Three UK, O2, Vodafone and EE.

A new report from technical UK consultancy firm FarrPoint, which examined the impact of a single network deployment, claims to have proven that investing in better rural mobile connectivity will bring “significant economic, social and environmental benefits” for those it covers.

A new Which? survey conducted by Yonder has claimed that 7.2% of households missed a bill or housing payment during June 2023 and, among those who missed one or more bills, 32% struggled to pay for broadband and / or TV, rising to 42% for energy bills, 40% for council tax and 38% for water.

A new YouGov survey of 1,150 adults aged 65+ in England, which was commissioned by older people’s charity Independent Age, has claimed that 48% of respondents on a low income (under £15k a year) have struggled to keep up with their broadband ISP bill in the last 6 months (20% of those found it a constant struggle and 28% struggled from time to time).

A new study by Uswitch, which adopted a Flesch–Kincaid readability test to examine the Terms & Conditions (T&Cs) of all the major UK broadband ISPs, has concluded that Sky Broadband’s terms are the “trickiest” for customers to understand. On the other hand, Plusnet’s terms were found to be the “most straightforward“.

A new “independent report” from policy institute Curia, which was commissioned by rural UK ISP Wildanet, has claimed that the rollout of gigabit-capable broadband across Devon (England) could generate £1.125 billion of new business gross value added (GVA) for the county by 2030.

Telecoms analysts at global market intelligence firm ThinkCX have today released the results from their latest market share report on the UK’s broadband ISP market, which claims to show that providers “with the biggest price hikes lost the most ground to rivals“. But the shifts are fairly small, and it may not be telling the whole story.

One of the biggest challenges for cheaper, and often faster, alternative broadband networks is the issue of consumer awareness. A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults (conducted during May 2023), which was commissioned by Uswitch, has found that only 15% of respondents have heard of altnets before.

The latest research from Ookla, which operates the popular broadband connection testing service Speedtest.net, has revealed that Smartphone users using 5G based mobile broadband networks suffer between 6% to 11% higher battery drain than for those using 4G.

A new survey of 3,975 UK people who had a contract for a home broadband ISP in December 2022 and January 2023, which was conducted by Which?, has found that 53% have experienced “connection issues” in the past year (e.g. very slow speeds, connection drop-outs etc.) and Sky Broadband were the worst offender.
