Internet benchmarking firm Ookla, which operates the popular broadband and mobile network performance testing service Speedtest.net, has revealed that 5G based mobile broadband download speeds have fallen across most regions of the UK over the past year. But despite this, overall data speeds (4G + 5G) have increased.

Internet benchmarking firm Ookla, which operates the popular broadband ISP performance testing service Speedtest.net and the real-time outage monitoring Downdetector service, has used data gathered from the latter to reveal which online services suffered the largest outages during the first half of 2023. Broadband ISP BT (EE) claims that the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 has driven spikes of up to 16% in their UK data traffic as people streamed the Lionesses’ on-pitch action live, rising to a peak of 866TB (TeraBytes) during Sunday’s final against Spain – as many viewers streamed it via the BBC and ITV platforms.

The latest independent data from Thinkbroadband‘s database has revealed that alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP networks (AltNets) now cover over a quarter (25.14%) of the UK, which is up from 23.64% at the end of June 2023. In terms of the top 10 locations where such networks dominate, Peterborough (84%) comes first.

A new survey of over 1,000 UK people, which was conducted by ExpressVPN, has found that 59% of respondents do not trust their neighbours with access to their home broadband ISP network via Wi-Fi and seemingly for good reasons – linked to privacy and security. But we assume this means 41% would still trust their neighbours.

The latest Q2 2023 data from caller ID verification firm Hiya, which among other things also works with UK broadband ISP BT (EE) to help detect and block SPAM and fraud calls, has revealed that 27.3% of UK calls from non-contacts are spam (79.3 million) and, of that figure, 18% were classified as “nuisance calls” and 9.3% were “fraud calls“.

A new survey from mobile operator Vodafone UK has claimed that people are now keeping their mobile devices for longer, with the majority upgrading every 4 years, compared to every 2 years some five years ago. The cost-of-living crisis and rapidly rising prices of high-end Smartphones is no doubt playing a big role here.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 kicked off last month and UK ISP EE (BT) reports that the three matches involving England’s squad have caused a modest, but noticeable, increase in broadband data traffic, rising by between 7-8% compared to an “average” day.

Mobile operator Three UK has today reported their latest results to 30th June 2023, which among other things reveals that their 5G based mobile broadband network is now live across more than 4,400 sites (up from 4,250 at the end of 2022) in over 610 towns and cities – achieving 61% outdoor population coverage (up from just 60%).

New research from network operator Virgin Media (VMO2) and economic consultancy Cebr has claimed that £65.1bn could be added to the UK economy and employment could be increased by 6.8% (creating an additional 284,000 new jobs), but only provided all rural areas get access to “excellent digital connectivity“.

Analyst firm M-Lab and comparison site Cable.co.uk have published their annual 2023 global broadband ISP speeds report, which reveals that the United Kingdom delivered an average (mean) download speed of 93.62Mbps (up from 72.06Mbps last year), ranking us 34th fastest in the world (up from 35th in 2022 and 43rd in 2021).

Ofcom’s latest quarterly (Q1 2023) study of UK consumer complaints has named and shamed TalkTalk for attracting the most consumer gripes about both fixed line broadband and landline phone services (making a change from Shell Energy), while BT did the same for both Pay Monthly Mobile and Pay TV services.

The BT Group has published a rather limited Q1 FY24 (quarterly) trading update to June 2023, which includes very few of the usual details but does reveal that Openreach’s roll-out of a full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network (coverage) grew by 718,000 UK premises in Q1 to total 11 million (up from 702k last quarter).
