Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today published a new Digital Ambition 2030 study, which among other things claims that investment in 5G could be worth up to £7bn per year to the UK economy by 2030 and that failing to attract such investment may “undermine” the Levelling Up agenda, with “towns and smaller cities having the most to lose“.

A new Opinium survey of 4,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch, has claimed that almost 11 million consumers experienced “broadband outages” of 3 or more hours over the last year – stopping 16% of respondents from doing their work at home. As a result, the economy took a £1.28bn hit due to outages.

A new survey of over 1,000 British Micro and SME businesses, which was commissioned by Three UK, has warned that such firms (i.e. those who provide their employees with work phones) are losing out on an average of 1 hour of working time per employee per week due to poor connecting – costing them £18.77bn a year.

A recent study by researchers at Lancaster University has found that 28% of the population in rural North West England are not confident in completing key tasks online (e.g. applying for jobs) and 19% found either their PC, broadband, smartphone or mobile data unaffordable – rising to 36% among households with an income of under £20k.

We’ve today taken our biannual (H1 2022) look back to see how the UK’s average broadband download and upload speeds have changed across the fastest nationally available fixed line ISPs and mobile operators. Suffice to say, the growing availability of gigabit-capable fixed and 5G networks is having a real impact.

The Government’s £2.53bn Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB) has so far helped to extend 24-30Mbps+ capable UK ISP networks to 5,440,086 extra premises since 2012 and the latest take-up data to March 2022 shows strong demand, with adoption in most of the original build areas now exceeding 80%.

Communications and energy provider Telecom Plus, which trade as UW (Utility Warehouse), has published their annual report and revealed that they ended the year with a UK customer base of 728,680 (up from 657,411 last year), with 323,623 taking their broadband services (down from 324,499) and 324,773 taking mobile (up from 302,654).

A new survey of UK businesses, which was commissioned by UK5G – the national innovation network dedicated to accelerating the adoption of 5G in the UK, has claimed that the vast majority of UK businesses (70%) are already using or planning to deploy 5G services and networks. But cost is still a key barrier to adoption.

The UK Government has today responded to an earlier consultation on their new Data Reform Bill (DRB) by, among other things, setting out how they’ll increase the financial penalties for those pestering people with nuisance calls and text (SMS) messages. But this probably won’t do much to stop calls made from outside the country.

The latest H2 2021 study into the broadband coverage of new build UK homes has found that over 96% of houses constructed during the second half of last year were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP network (up from 93% in H1 2021), which rises to 99%+ for 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” services.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association and Point Topic have published their 2022 report into the impact of alternative “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks, which reveals that such providers grew their UK cover by 111% in 2021 (up from 110% last year) to cover 5.46 million premises and could hit 11.6m this year.

A new study of 1,500 UK based adults, which was commissioned by London-focused ISP CommunityFibre and conducted by Perspectus Global in March 2022, has claimed that 20% of Brits cannot afford to pay their broadband bill and 33% would rather cut back on their fuel use than cut back on internet access to save money.

London-focused gigabit-broadband builder and UK ISP G.Network, which unexpectedly saw its founder and former CEO – Sasho Veselinski – exit last month due to “personal reasons” (here), has managed to grab the former Managing Director of Openreach’s Fibre and Network Delivery team, Kevin Murphy, to be its new CEO.

Customers of both Virgin Media and O2’s (VMO2) UK mobile and fixed broadband ISP networks have, since 1st June 2021 (the date their merger completed), used a total of 39 billion GigaBytes (GB) of data over the past year, with mobile users also totalling 116 billion minutes (equivalent to a call lasting 220,000 years).
