Major alternative network provider CityFibre, which is currently investing over £5bn (debt and equity) to make their full fibre (FTTP) based gigabit broadband ISP network available to almost 8 million premises (c.30% of the UK) by the end of 2025 (here), has today announced a “major brand update” (i.e. they have a new logo).

The European Commission recently published their annual 2022 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which charts how the EU’s fixed line broadband ISP and mobile networks compare across all of its 27 countries. The UK was removed from this report post-Brexit, but it’s still possible to see how we compare by using Ofcom’s data.

Mobile operator Three UK has today reported their latest financial results, which among other things revealed that the average 4G / 5G data usage (mobile broadband), per customer, per month on their network had reached 21.3 GigaBytes in June 2022 (up from 19GB in Dec 2021).

UK ISP Zzoomm has today announced that they’ve decided to adopt Iskratel’s XGS-PON based Optical Line Terminals (OLTs) and Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) to help power their UK rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which already covers 50,000 premises.

A new “nationally representative” Opinium survey 3,087 UK adults with a mobile, broadband ISP, or mortgage contract, which was commissioned by Citizens Advice, has found that 1-in-7 customers are still paying their providers a “loyalty penalty” (i.e. paying more than new customers) despite cost-of-living crisis.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have published their joint Q2 2022 results, which saw fixed broadband reach 5,612,000 customers (up by 16,000 in Q2 2022 vs -1K in Q1) and their FTTP coverage reach another 114,000 premises. The fixed line network now covers 15.9m premises (54% of UK).

The BT Group has published their Q1 2022/23 results to June 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 7.957 million premises (up by a record of 763K in the quarter vs 752K last quarter). Meanwhile, EE’s 5G network now reaches 55% of the UK population.

Technical UK consultancy firm FarrPoint has estimated that the cost of household connectivity services (e.g. fixed broadband, phone and mobile) could rise by more than a third over the next 5 years. As usual, the proposed solution is to try shopping around for a better deal.

Mobile testing firm RootMetrics, which was last year acquired by Ookla (here), has today published their biannual H1 2022 study of mobile network (4G and 5G) and broadband performance across the United Kingdom, which sees EE collecting the most awards. But rival Three UK is threatening to pull ahead in 5G.

A new study of 1,500 London based pensioners, which was conducted by Perspectus Global in July 2022 and commissioned by Age UK and ISP CommunityFibre, has claimed that 43% of those over the age of 60 are “struggling to pay for internet access” via broadband and mobile data services as a result of the cost-of-living crisis.

New research has analysed 5,292 mobile data (mobile broadband) plans from across 233 countries in order to compare the cost of a 1GB (GigaByte) data allowance, which found that the United Kingdom has improved its rank from 78th in 2021 to 59th in 2022, with an average price of USD $0.79 per GB (down from $1.42).

Ofcom’s latest Q1 2022 study of UK consumer complaints has revealed that ISP Shell Energy attracted the most moans for both fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while Virgin Mobile did the same for Pay Monthly mobile services and Virgin Media were also on the naughty step for Pay TV.

The latest independent biannual summary of UK broadband coverage for H1 2022 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have boosted their reach to 37.61% of premises (up from 30.23% in H2 2021) and 69.24% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 65.22%). But the results vary around England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland.

Telecoms giant BT has posted a new update on their current network plans and performance, which among other things reveals that data and internet traffic over their fixed network (broadband and Ethernet) recently hit a new peak of 28Tbps (Terabits per second) during their busiest hour (up from 25Tbps at the end of 2021).

The Institute of Customer Service (ICS) has today published their latest biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index (July 2022), which this time reports that Tesco Mobile (ranked 4th) was the only telecommunications provider to make it into their ranking of the top 50 organisations.

A new study of job listings on employment hunting site Indeed claims to have identified the top 25 UK industries most in need of workers, which among other things reveals that the telecommunications (broadband, Ethernet and mobile etc.) sector ranks 13th overall with 3,352 job listings. But Healthcare dominates.

Network builder and UK ISP Zzoomm has today released their annual results, which among other things reveals that their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has now expanded to cover 50,000 premises (up from 10,000 in Dec 2021) with 3,000 customers connected (up from 1,400).
