The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, recently published updated Key Performance Indicator (KPI) statistics for the broadband and mobile market’s only two approved Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) providers, which are independent ombudsman services that help consumers to resolve complaints when ISPs fail to do so.

A new report from Ookla (Speedtest.net) has revealed how fast SpaceX’s new Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) ultrafast broadband satellites are for UK customers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it comfortably beats fixed broadband ISPs for median (average) download speeds, but uploads and latency are another matter.

A somewhat questionable new survey from Uswitch, which is based on feedback from a nationally representative sample of 4,002 UK adults, has boldly claimed that 1.3 million UK households are already using a satellite broadband connection. But we can’t find anything to substantiate such a figure.

A new Which? survey of more than 3,000 customers from five major UK broadband ISP and TV providers – including BT, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, TalkTalk and EE – has found that two thirds of respondents experienced at least one problem with their service in the past year, while 30% said the price they pay had increased.

The BT Group has today reported their latest Q1 2021/22 results, which among other things reports that Openreach’s 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers 5.16 million UK premises (up from 4.6m last quarter) and 860,000 of BT’s retail ISP customers have taken the service.

The latest combined Q2 2021 results from broadband ISP, TV and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 has, among other things, revealed that they plan to completely upgrade their existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFX) network – some 14.3 million premises – with Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tech by the end of 2028.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents alternative broadband networks (AltNet), has seen its UK membership balloon skywards after gaining 32 members in 2021 so far. The growth reflects a surge in new AltNets, many of which are building their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) infrastructure.

The annual Digging Up Britain 2021 report from LSBUD (Line Search Before You Dig), which provides an online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms for underground pipes and cables, has reported that there was a 24% increase in the amount of digging work performed by the telecoms industry over the last 12-months.

A new Opinium survey of 4,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch, has claimed that 14.85 million people have been hit by a “major broadband outage” in the last year – this is said to be three times the number of the previous year’s survey (4.7 million).

A new survey involving 651 members of the Countryside Alliance, which was conducted by UK broadband ISP Gigaclear, has found that 85% of rural businesses view their current internet connection as being either poor but manageable (47%), or unmanageably poor (38%). Unsurprisingly, most of them want “ultrafast fibre” to fix it.

The High Court in London has, following a case raised by the Motion Picture Association of Europe (MPA), issued a new injunction that forces most of the major UK broadband ISPs (e.g. BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Virgin Media, Plusnet etc.) to block 19 websites that were found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

A new YouGov survey of 2,130 UK adults, which was commissioned by O2 (VMO2), has claimed that 70% of house-hunters would be prepared to walk away from a dream home if the local mobile signal wasn’t up to par, while 31% would pay more for a property with a good signal and 20% are prepared to pay up to £10,000 more!

Mobile testing firm RootMetrics has published their latest biannual H1 2021 study of mobile network (4G and 5G) and broadband performance across the United Kingdom, which once again named EE (BT) as the best overall operator. But they were beaten in one category, with O2 (VMO2) coming top for accessibility.

A new YouGov survey of 2,016 UK adults, commissioned by Netgem, has claimed that up to four in five rural respondents would like more than “broadband only” offers from ISPs, but the “lack of gigabit-capable broadband availability currently prevents them from accessing the popular streaming services the rest of the nation enjoys.” Does it?

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) reported a sharp decrease in internet traffic during England’s Euro 2020 football final against Italy on Sunday, with customers downloading 28% less than at the same time last week. Likewise, mobile operator O2 reported “no significant rise” in data usage.

The Institute of Customer Service has today published their latest biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index (July 2021), which sadly saw only one telecommunications provider make it into their ranking of the top 50 organisations – Tesco Mobile, albeit with a slightly improved score of 83.9 out of 100 (up from 83.3) in January 2021.
