The latest research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 1.6% (18.59 million) in Q4 2020, which is down slightly from 2.07% in the previous quarter but still pushes the overall total to 1.18 billion. Meanwhile, the UK reported the strongest quarterly “full fibre” (FTTP) growth of any country on 28.6%.

The combination of good weather and the further easing of COVID-19 related lockdown restrictions has, according to UK ISP TalkTalk, seen weekly broadband traffic on their network fall by 13% since the latest relaxation of rules started on 12th April 2021. In short, we’re all spending more time outside.

A new Opinium survey of 2,001 UK adults, which was conducted in mid-March 2021 and commissioned by Uswitch, has revealed that 26% of people with a landline don’t even have a phone attached to it and 35% of respondents said they only have a landline because it’s needed for their broadband connection.

A new survey of 2,026 UK adults, which was conducted by Censuswide for UK broadband ISP Zen Internet, has found that 75% of respondents would not buy a home if they knew the local internet connectivity was poor. The survey added that people would be willing to pay £1,514 extra for a house that has FTTP broadband.

The London Internet Exchange (LINX), which through its switches handles a key chunk of UK and global data traffic from 965 members (broadband ISPs, mobile operators etc.), has today reported that they hit a new total traffic peak last week of 6.05Tbps (Terabits per second).

A new study has analysed 6,148 mobile data (mobile broadband) plans from across 230 countries in order to compare the cost of a 1GB (GigaByte) data allowance, which found that the United Kingdom has seen its position fall from 59th last year to 78th in 2021, with an average price of USD $1.42 per GB (up from $1.39).

A new report from mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has used the data they gathered for their previous H2 2020 study (here) to rank 16 of the United Kingdom’s largest and fastest cities by their average (median) download speed on 4G and 5G networks. Liverpool came top with an aggregate speed of 43.6Mbps.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today published their latest annual 2021 Internet Users report, which reveals that 6.3% of adults (3.36 million) in the UK had never used the internet in 2020 (down from 7.5% in the prior year). As usual the lack of adoption is highest among the oldest adults and those with disabilities.

Gigabit broadband ISP Virgin Media has reported a week of extreme variations in UK internet traffic, which saw both the lowest level of upstream traffic in 2021 occur on Tuesday and then, the very next day, one of the highest peaks in downstream traffic hit their network (thanks to another massive Call of Duty update).

A new survey of 4,000 UK mobile phone users by consumer magazine Which? has claimed that consumers on SIM-Only plans and contracts are “wasting” an average of 14GB (GigaBytes) of mobile broadband data each month. In short, some people could save money by switching to a plan with a smaller allowance.

Broadband ISP Zen Internet has published a brief summary of internet traffic trends on their network for the past year (March 2020 to March 2021), since the first COVID-19 lockdown, which found that internet usage in the United Kingdom had increased by 78% year-on-year.

The Government’s £2.52bn Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB) has so far helped to extend 24-30Mbps+ capable UK ISP networks to 5,327,128 extra premises since 2012 (up by 33.9K in H2 2020 vs 62.7K in H1 2020) – about 440,000 (our estimate) of these are FTTP – and take-up data to December 2020 shows strong demand.

A new Opinium based survey from Uswitch.com, which questioned a “nationally representative” sample of 2,000 UK adults during February 2021, has found that 54.4% of respondents (equivalent to 29.5 million UK consumers) have suffered from some form of mobile signal “issue” at home, and it’s worse in rural areas.

A new report from UK consumer complaints handler firm Ombudsman Services (OS), which is an Ofcom approved Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provider for UK broadband ISPs, mobile operators and energy providers, has found that many people are still confused about when and where to get unresolved complaints tackled.

UK ISP Hyperoptic and SAY Property Consulting have published a new report, which surveyed over 2,000 members of the public and 311 property industry experts to help understand how the COVID-19 crisis has changed internet connectivity in homes and what the post-pandemic world may look like. Just 10% of people want to go back to the office full-time.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media reports that internet download traffic on their network hit a new record on Thursday 25th Feb 2021, with the average user consuming a whopping 20.77GB (GigaBytes) of data in a single 24-hour period (3.5GB more than the daily average in 2020). An update to the Call of Duty: Warzone game was partly to blame.
