Internet traffic and broadband growth

O2 has revealed that they’re expecting a 4G and 5G “surge in mobile data [broadband] traffic along the UK’s main motorways this bank holiday,” with 77% of survey respondents saying they’ll rely on mobile devices to keep passengers entertained. Over a third of cars on the roads will also have over 3 mobile devices at any time.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published a new report that examines the mobile broadband download speeds and availability of 5G networks across EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK in four recently tested cities during the first half of 2021 – Birmingham, Bristol, Coventry, and London.

A new survey of 400 UK-based SME businesses, which was conducted by ISP Spitfire during March 2021, has found that nearly half (46%) of firms have no idea that their existing analogue phone and ISDN services will be switched-off completely by December 2025.

Ofcom has today published somewhat of a preview for their annual study into fixed line UK broadband ISP speeds, which reveals that the average (mean) download speed of home connections has risen by 25.3% since last year to 80.2Mbps. Upload speeds have also jumped by 54% to 21.6Mbps.

The BT Group has published their latest Q4 2020/21 results today, which reveals that Openreach has further expanded their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network rollout target from 20 million UK premises to 25 million by December 2026. The extended target will support an additional 7,000 jobs.

The FTTH Council Europe has published their annual 2021 market panorama, which ranks the countries with the strongest subscriber penetration of “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) based ultrafast broadband ISP networks. The good news is that the UK has continued to show strong growth, but we remain stuck at third from the bottom.

A new survey from Ericsson, which makes 5G networking kit and services for mobile network operators, has found that the number of UK consumers intending to upgrade to 5G has decreased to 25% (down from 27% in 2019) and others remain confused about what the technology will deliver.

Ofcom’s latest Spring 2021 update for UK broadband and mobile networks has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has grown to 21% (up from 18% in Sep 2020) and 37% or 10.8 million homes are within reach of a gigabit-capable (1000Mbps) network (up from 27%). But sadly 4G coverage has not improved and there’s no mention of 5G.

New data from caller ID verification firm Hiya has reported that over 1 billion nuisance calls (e.g. silent calls, spam or frauds) have been made to people in the United Kingdom in 2021 so far and, more worrying perhaps, nuisance call volumes are currently increasing at a rate of 30% every month.

UK ISP TalkTalk Business has today revealed that they saw a “sharp rise” in business broadband usage during the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e. March 2020 to March 2021), with average monthly usage rising 25% from 172GB to 212GB (GigaBytes). In keeping with that, c.10,000 of their customers upgraded to faster products during the period.

Ofcom has published their 2021 survey of UK broadband ISP and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest providers. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%), while Three UK did the same for mobile (86%). Generally, customer service has taken a COVID-19 hit.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has just published their latest Q1 2021 results, which saw their network coverage extend to another 80,000 premises (their slowest quarterly build so far) and their internet access base add +38,500 customers (up from +54.7k last quarter) to total 5,458,600.

Business and residential UK ISP Glide Group, which claims to have a national “full fibre” broadband network that reaches over 100,000 premises, has today hailed the fact that they’ve managed to record an extremely strong Net Promoter Score (NPS) level of +91.84 since September 2020 and +80 for service delivery in 2021.

Ofcom’s latest Q4 2020 consumer complaints report has today been published, which names and shames Vodafone for attracting the most gripes about fixed broadband and phone in the quarter, while iD Mobile and Three UK jointly did the same for Mobile and Virgin Media came bottom for Pay TV.

A new survey from Broadband Genie, which used a special tool to analyse and estimate the consumer stress levels of 344,243 tweets that were aimed at UK mobile operators, claims to have identified those that had the most stressed customers. Apparently, customers of iD Mobile are the most frustrated.

The Centre for Economics & Business Research and Ofcom have today released separate, albeit complementary, reports that take a post-COVID19 look at the UK’s digital divide. The CEBR in particular estimates that 1 million people could return to the workforce with FTTP broadband available across the UK (up from the previous estimate of 500k).

A new Point Topic study, commissioned by TV and WiFi Mesh provider Netgem, has predicted that Alternative Networks (AltNet) and “Challenger ISPs” could gain up to 1 million additional UK customers by 2025, which would increase their market share to 14.5% (3.74 million customers) from 12.5% in 2021.
