The latest survey of 27,000 UK train passengers from Transport Focus (TF) has revealed that just 33% of commuters are satisfied with the reliability of their on-board internet connection (up from 30% last year) and 36% were satisfied with the availability of WiFi. Heathrow Express came top with 74% satisfied.

A new report from Hatch Regeneris, which was commissioned by the BT Group, has estimated that the telecoms and broadband ISP giant generated a £22.8 billion contribution to the UK economy (expressed as GVA – Gross Value Added) during the 2017/18 financial year (down from £23.1bn in 2016).

The latest quarterly results from TalkTalk to the end of 2018 (Q3 FY19) has seen the ISP add a further +44,000 on-net broadband customers to total 4,287,000 (up from the +24k added in the previous quarter), although sadly there’s not much of an update on their “FibreNation” FTTH deployment.

BT Group has released their results to the end of December 2018 (Q3 – 18/19 financial), which reports that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) UK ISP network has grown its coverage from 1.97m premises passed to 2.6m in the last quarter. Take-up of FTTP is 29.9% and G.fast just 0.88%.

The Citizens Advice agency has claimed that 71% of UK Mobile customers with SIM-Only plans are “overpaying for data they don’t use,” such as when connecting via 3G or 4G (mobile broadband). The estimated average amount of data “wasted” each month is 2GB, which they equated to a total cost of £800m per year.

A new report has revealed that 81% of global fixed broadband ISP subscriptions were fibre optic (FTTH/B/C) and cable (DOCSIS) based during Q3 2018, while the total number of connections increased by 25.4 million (+2.6%) in the quarter to deliver a milestone total of 1.008 Billion!

Ofcom’s newest Q3 2018 UK consumer complaints report has revealed that, for the first time, ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while Sky Broadband won praise for seeing the fewest moans. Pay TV and Mobile providers are also covered.

Ofcom has today published their annual 2019 study of media use by UK children and parents, which among other things reports that just over half of parents are aware of the home network-level internet content filters being offered by the biggest broadband ISPs but only around a third actually use them.

The 2019 Halifax Quality of Life Survey (Bank of Scotland) has just been published, which balances a combination of broadband speed, health, crime rate, weather, employment, happiness and skills in order to identify the best places to live in the UK. Once again Orkney in Scotland comes top of the list.

The Government’s £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK project has just published its latest take-up data to the end of September 2018 for its state aid supported roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom, which has so far extended coverage to 5,011,052 extra premises.

Consumer magazine Which? has used data from its broadband ISP speedtest to both identify some of the UK’s fastest local authority areas for average download speed (Broxbourne on 32.5Mbps) and some of its slowest “black spots” (Orkney islands on 3Mbps) for 2019. But network availability may tell a different story.

A new survey of 2,010 UK adults who are in employment has found that Brits spend an average of 8 hours and 35 minutes (weekly) on using their home broadband ISP connection to work, which it’s estimated equates to a monthly cost of £11.94. Many bosses believe you should be able to claim that back from your employer.

The National Farmers Union has published the results from its latest online and telephone based survey of 812 members, which found that just 16% of farmers had access to “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds (up from 4% in 2015) and only 17% have a “reliable” outdoor mobile signal. But the situation has improved.

Ofcom has today published a new report, which examines how affordability, take-up and engagement with UK telecoms, TV and postal services compares via different groups. Overall 13% of broadband and phone consumers switched ISP (down from 17% a year ago) and financially vulnerable people are less likely to have “superfast” speeds.

Which? has published yet another “Loyalty Penalty” focused survey of 3,131 members, which found that 40% of customers who signed up to a dual or triple-play bundle (e.g. broadband, phone and mobile or TV) have stayed with the same UK ISP for 10+ years and could thus be paying significantly more than new subscribers.

A new independent model has estimated that the coverage of fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks across the United Kingdom has grown to 95.8% at the end of 2018 (up from 95.3% in H1 2018), while “full fibre” (FTTP/H) networks now reach 5.47% of premises (up from 3.82% in H1).

New research from Ofcom has today suggested that remembering phone numbers – or even needing to dial them – could soon become a thing of the past as consumers are changing how they communicate and making greater use of broadband internet and mobile services. The landline phone era is slowly coming to an end.
