Network testing firm Opensignal has published a new study that examines the “striking gap” between the home broadband speeds users are promised by ISPs and the speeds they actually experience – “the biggest factor behind this disconnect is the in-home Wi-Fi environment“.

New research from Broadband Genie, which surveyed 3,996 UK broadband customers, claims to have found that consumers who adopt packages from ISPs that harness alternative networks (i.e. not Openreach or Virgin Media based) could be getting twice the internet speed for almost a third (28%) off the price.

The UK communications and media regulator, Ofcom, has today published its Media Nations 2025 report, which reveals how linear TV viewing continues to decline in favour of broadband-based video streaming platforms (particularly YouTube and Netflix). But broadcast TV currently still accounts for the majority (56%) of in-home viewing (down from 57% last year).

The latest Q2 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 today have revealed that their gigabit broadband network increased by 114,900 premises in the quarter to cover 18.53 million UK homes. But related customers suffered another fall to total 5,643,500 (down by -51.4k in Q2 vs -44k in Q1) and O2’s mobile base also suffered a fall (albeit with positive results in wholesale).

A recent study by telecom analyst firm Tarifica, which examined the change in fixed broadband ISP pricing between 2023 and 2025 across six major European countries (Italy, France, Spain, United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands), has found that prices fell in every country except the UK where they rose by 7.86%.

Broadband and mobile operator Vodafone has published their first combined Q1 FY26 financial results with Three UK. The figures show that the merged entity has 1.654 million fixed broadband customers (up by 44k in Q1 vs 61k in the previous quarter) and a huge combined mobile base of 28.765m – making them the “biggest mobile network operator in the UK“.

Telecoms giant BT Group just published a short trading update to the end June 2025 (Q1 FY26), which reveals that Openreach lost another 169,000 total broadband lines to rival networks over the past quarter (down from 243k in the previous quarter). But they also saw their “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage grow to over 19 million premises (up by 1m) and take-up increased to 37% (up from 36.13%).

Alternative network operator Netomnia (Brsk, Youfibre) has today published their Q2 2025 results, which reveals that their multi-gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network now covers 2.56 million UK premises (up 243k in the quarter) and is home to 341,000 customers (up 54k).

A new survey of 108 Members of Parliament, which was conducted by consultancy firm Cluttons and polling company YouGov, has revealed that only 34% of MPs currently believe the UK will achieve the government’s target of delivering Standalone 5G (5GSA) mobile coverage to all populated areas by 2030. The figure drops even lower for the gigabit broadband target.

The UK internet content and telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed changes that will require phone providers to withhold the Caller ID (CLI) of calls that appear to come from a UK mobile roaming abroad unless they can verify its validity. The goal is to tackle scam calls by cracking down on number “spoofing“.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has published the results from their annual digital access survey of 661 members (conducted between February and March 2025), which found that just 33% of farmers had access to “fibre broadband” speeds and nearly one out of ten respondents have no 4G or 5G mobile access.

A new survey of 300 alternative networks, ISPs, suppliers and other companies has found that 83% of altnet decision makers believe their companies will grow over the next year, while 77% said they are planning to increase their investment in the coming 12 months. Similarly, 70% believe the forthcoming consolidation will have a positive impact.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published their 2025 Mobile Matters report, which uses Opensignal’s crowdsourced data (collected between October 2024 and March 2025) to benchmark the performance of UK mobile broadband networks by both technology (2G to 5G), nation and operator choice – including Three UK, O2, Vodafone and EE.

Broadband network benchmarking firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular internet Speedtest.net website and App, has published the results of a new Q2 2025 study that ranks European countries by their level of 5G mobile network availability. But the UK somewhat unsurprisingly comes in near the bottom with an availability level of 45.2%.

Consumer magazine Which? has this morning named the winners of their Shoddy Awards 2025, which lists the companies that have done poorly through the year. The bad news is that broadband ISP Virgin Media was awarded a Shoddy for the third year running due to poor ratings and price rises, while EE picked up an award for its mid-contract price rises on mobile bundles.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT (EE) has published a new report from Assembly Research, which suggests that the UK is one of the hardest countries for building new mobile broadband infrastructure and has called for more reform of the planning rules (e.g. allowing taller masts). The prize, claims the report, could be to unlock up to £230bn in economic benefits by 2035.

New research from Broadband Genie and OnePoll, which surveyed a total of 3,997 broadband bill payers in the UK between July and November 2024, has revealed that 60% of respondents are out-of-contract – varying between a peak of 64% for those aged 65+ and a low of 55% for those aged 18-24. But many of these could be paying extra by failing to switch ISP.
