A new survey of over 800 businesses and farmers in the Anglia region of England (e.g. Norfolk) has found that 57% suffer from “poor” or “very poor” mobile phone signals and 31% can only receive a basic home broadband connection that delivers a download speed of less than 2Mbps.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today published their results to the end of last year (financial Q3 15/16), which saw their fixed line broadband customers increase by +14k to total 89,000 (up from +5k added in the previous quarter) and 4G cover reach 79% of the UK (86% using Ofcom’s definition) with 6.3 million subscribers.

Cisco’s annual Mobile Data Traffic Forecast (2015 – 2020) has today been published, which found that mobile data traffic in the United Kingdom reached 86.2 PetaBytes per month in 2015 and the average mobile connection speed topped 5.8Mbps (forecast to reach 18.1Mbps in 2020).

The Government has today published a new report on the “successful” outcome of their recent Market Test Pilots, which were setup in 2014 to help trial alternative network solutions (fibre optic, satellite, wireless etc.) for bringing superfast broadband (24Mbps+) to remote rural areas.

BT has today released its latest Q4 2015 results (calendar) and confirmed that their retail division has a total of 7,996,000 broadband subscribers (up by +130K vs +82K in Q3), with 3,689,000 of those on their superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) service (up by +250K in Q4 vs +212K in Q3). The operator has also revealed some more details about their post EE merger plans.

Ookla, the company behind the popular Speedtest.net service, has accused a broadband ISP in the United Kingdom of “intentional manipulation” by “prioritizing port 8080” Internet traffic in order to return a better performance result for their subscribers. But the reality may be more complicated.

At the end of last year the Government announced that their Broadband Delivery UK project with BT had so far managed to expand the availability of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) capable lines to 3.5 million premises (here), but we now know that this figure is closer to 4 million when you include sub-24Mbps premises.

The next set of financial results from TalkTalk aren’t due until 2nd February 2016, but that hasn’t stopped a new Kantar Worldpanel report from predicting that the ISP may have lost up to 7% (200,000 – 300,000) of its broadband base in the final quarter of 2015 after last October’s Cyber-Attack.

Point Topic has updated their Digital Deprivation Index that attempts to identify which parts of the UK are most likely to struggle with the take-up of superfast broadband (30Mbps+) services, often due to issues such as low income or disability. Sadly West Somerset and Hull come top of the table.

The latest statistics from Point Topic reveal that the total number of world fixed broadband subscriptions reached approximately 738 million in Q3 2015, with the vast majority of growth being driven by fibre optic (FTTH/C/P) based technologies; albeit mostly in parts of Asia, Africa and Latin America.

The consumer division of BT has today revealed that home broadband and WiFi usage on their national UK network “increased substantially” over the festive season and almost doubled (95%) year-on-year on Christmas Day.

Cable operator Virgin Media reports that the average household in the United Kingdom had five different Internet-enabled gadgets connected to their broadband network on Christmas day, which peaked at 10pm and the majority of devices were identified as being Smartphones connected via WiFi.
