The latest annual Lloyds Bank UK Consumer Digital Index 2018 has revealed that the number one reason why people offline are not using the internet is because they have no interest or motivation. Meanwhile problems with poor broadband ISP and mobile connectivity remain in the minority.

BT has released their Q1 2018 (calendar) results, which sees them increase FTTP and Mobile infrastructure investment via an annual capex allocation of around £3.7bn (excluding BDUK) and report that 1.56 million UK premises are now covered by their G.fast and FTTP based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+).

Ofcom 2018 Study – Average Home Broadband Speeds Hit 46.2Mbps

Ofcom has published their annual study of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds across the United Kingdom, which reveals that the average download rate has risen from 36.2Mbps last year to 46.2Mbps now, while uploads hit 6.2Mbps (up from 4.3Mbps). Sadly the gap between urban and rural areas persists.

BDUK Superfast Broadband Project Reveals UK Take-up for Q4 2017

The Government’s £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK project has published its latest take-up data to the end of 2017 (Q4) for the state aid supported roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom, which sees adoption continue to rise with many areas above 50%.

Virgin Media UK Cable Rollout Slows as Broadband Users Top 5.13m

Cable provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has published their latest Q1 2018 (calendar) results, which saw them add +31,200 broadband subscribers in the quarter to total 5,135,500 (up from the +24K added in Q4 2017) and extend their cable network to another 111,000 UK premises.

2018 Study Compares Big UK Mobile and Broadband ISPs by Quality

Ofcom has published their annual study of service quality, call waiting times, complaints and service provision among the largest UK ISPs and Mobile operators, which among other things found that Plusnet had the longest call waiting times (7:50 mins) and the highest broadband satisfaction (86%).

Home and Small Business UK Broadband Lines Top 26 Million – Q4 2017

The latest Q4 2017 Telecoms Market Data Tables from Ofcom have confirmed that the United Kingdom is home to a total of 26 million fixed home and small business broadband lines (up by +546,000 since Q4 2016), with 53.4% being faster full fibre or hybrid-fibre based (FTTC, FTTP/H, Cable etc.) services.

BT Research Finds Faster Broadband Helps to Sell N.Ireland Homes

A new FN Research survey commissioned by BT has reported that 60% of people in Northern Ireland would be put off from moving into a new house if it suffered from “poor or slow broadband“. Similarly 63% said that having “fibre broadband” (FTTC / FTTP) in their household was very important.

Ofcom Study Finds Faster Broadband Speeds Can Boost UK GDP

A new study, which examined the economic impact of broadband connectivity among 35 OECD countries between 2002 to 2016, has found that a rise in broadband adoption and speeds over the period led to an increase in UK GDP of 0.47% per annum on average (cumulative total of 6.7% over the period).

The telecoms regulator has today published an update to last year’s annual Connected Nations report, which uses more recent data from 2018 to provide the latest coverage statistics for UK mobile and fixed line broadband networks. For example, “full fibre” (FTTH/P) now reaches 4% (1.2 million premises).

BT Sees its UK Broadband ISP Traffic Peak at 10.37 Terabits in April

Customers of BT’s own retail broadband ISP business (around 9.4 million of them) recently hit a dramatic new level of internet data traffic after the network peaked at 10.37Tbps (Terabits per second), which occurred during the Manchester City vs Liverpool football game on 10th April 2018.

A new uSwitch.com survey of 2,004 UK adults (773 parents), which was conducted during March 2018 and weighted to reflect a nationally representative criteria, has claimed that 30% of respondents have taken out their frustrations with internet devices or services on other members of their household.

Which? 2018 UK Mobile Network Survey Ranks UW and Giffgaff Top

Consumer magazine Which? has published the results from their latest 2018 consumer survey of Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which ranked Utility Warehouse top with a customer score of 84% and they were followed by giffgaff (81%). Sadly Vodafone retains the bottom spot.

Terms Agreed for Bidco to Buy UK FTTH Builder CityFibre for £538m

Fibre optic (FTTP/H) network builder Cityfibre has announced that they’ve agreed the terms of a recommended £537.8m cash acquisition by Connect Infrastructure Bidco Limited (Bidco), which is a newly-incorporated company that is jointly-owned by a consortium of two key infrastructure investors.

Internet Users Only Keeping a UK Fixed Phone Line for Broadband

Do we still need a fixed line telephone (voice) service? A new ISPreview survey of 1,911 readers has found that only 14.5% still use a landline phone service for making most of their calls and 67.2% said they’d get rid of it if the service wasn’t still needed by most ISPs for home broadband.

Peak Time Congestion Hits Hardest for Broadband ISP Plusnet

A new study into the impact on broadband ISP download speeds of peak (afternoon) vs off-peak (morning/daytime) internet usage at the largest six broadband providers in the United Kingdom has revealed that Plusnet suffers the biggest proportional drop in performance, while oddly TalkTalk got faster.
