A new study from SignalTracker, which operates a popular Android mobile app (but not iOS) for monitoring and examining mobile phone reception, has compared the quality of Vodafone’s 5G between Birmingham and London to find that the former is falling considerably behind. Furthermore, 72% of tests on Vodafone’s flagship 5G plan were actually 4G quality.

A new study from Go.Compare, which combined ONS data with the results from a YouGov survey of 2,000 UK residents (conducted on 25th February 2025), has estimated that “up to” 11 million internet users could have access to full fibre (FTTP) broadband without realising. This is important as some ISPs offer free upgrades to the faster service.

A new study of over 380,000 web-based consumer broadband speed tests (recorded over the past 12-months), which was conducted by comparison site Broadband Genie, claims to have identified that broadband download speeds can slow down by up to 8% and uploads by up to 27% on the hottest days of the year (usually heatwaves).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has posted an update on their investigation into the performance of the new consumer broadband and phone switching system (One Touch Switching). This found no major problems with the biggest ISPs but did warn that some providers on Openreach’s network were using an “alternative switching method“, which they said must stop.

A new report from pipeline safety organisation Linewatch, which raises awareness of oil and gas pipelines around the UK and encourages safe practices when digging around them, has warned that 19% of workers have been reported for digging too close to underground high-pressure fuel pipelines while carrying out utility works (electricity, water, broadband etc.).

Openreach (BT) has marked “25 years of home broadband” by combining its own data with consumer research to map the UK cities by their online activity. The results found that the busiest hour of the day for internet usage in the UK is between 8-9pm, followed by 9-10pm and 7-8pm. And the highest peak of the year so far was on 14th January 2025 at 9pm.

The Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) has announced that they’ve appointed network analyst firm Streetwave to harness fleets of bin lorries to help “accurately” map 4G and 5G mobile broadband coverage and performance, which will focus on the North of Scotland (i.e. Moray, Aberdeenshire and Highland Council areas).

A new Point Topic study of all major standalone and bundled fixed broadband operators and their tariffs across the EU, UK, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland – reflecting a total of 31 countries and 200 operators – has revealed that the United Kingdom ranked a respectable 12th in the table (median average tariffs) and 4th for entry level package tariffs.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has revealed that they’ve won yet another contract to map 4G and 5G mobile broadband coverage and performance in England, which will this time see them testing along 6,000km of the road network within the four councils covered by the local authority’s Superfast South Yorkshire project.

The UK Government’s Minister for Telecoms, Sir Chris Bryant, this week provided more details to parliament on how Ofcom would soon improve the accuracy and relevance of their mobile coverage maps, which made particular reference to the minimum required 4G mobile broadband speed (currently 2Mbps) – this will shortly be more than doubled to 5Mbps.

Ofcom has today published their 2025 study of UK broadband, phone and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaint levels, fault repairs, compensation and install times for the largest providers. For example, TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%) and Plusnet (BT) secured the highest (91%).

The BT Group has today published their biannual full year (H2 FY25) results to March 2025, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) network added 2.2 million premises to their UK coverage in H2 (up from 2.1m in H1) to cover 18.08m (4.9m in rural areas) and will accelerate its rollout by 20%. But broadband line losses to rivals hit 243k in the last quarter (up from 208k).

Mobile network operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their Q4 FY25 financial results, which confirms that their fixed line broadband base grew by a healthy 61,000 in the last quarter to total 1.61 million customers (down from 72k added in Q3 2024). But their mobile base fell again to total 18.175m (down by -125k in Q4 vs -174k in Q3).

A new report from analyst firm Enders Analysis, which was recently shared with ISPreview, has revealed that broadband traffic volume growth across most developed countries has “slowed to a relative crawl” to become the “new normal” (i.e. falling from 30%+ for many years and now at 10-15%). The story is similar for mobile (4G, 5G etc.) services (falling to 5-10%).

A new report has revealed how much Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband coverage exists across the top 15 National Parks in England, Scotland and Wales. Overall the top performing park was found to be the Yorkshire Dales (57.05%), while on the flip side Loch Lomond and The Trossachs (28.23%) delivered the weakest coverage.

Industry trade body Mobile UK, which represents Three UK, EE, O2 and Vodafone, has published a new report from Assembly Research that calls on the government to “secure the UK’s economic growth goals and maintain its competitive standing” by supporting their familiar wish list of demands to help boost the roll-out and coverage of mobile networks (4G, 5G etc.).
