The ITS Technology Group (its.), which operates 35 wholesale full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks across urban areas of the UK, has today announced a significant new partnership with high bandwidth wholesaler Virtual1 (TalkTalk) that appears set to combine their respective network reach.

Ofcom’s latest Q1 2022 study of UK consumer complaints has revealed that ISP Shell Energy attracted the most moans for both fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while Virgin Mobile did the same for Pay Monthly mobile services and Virgin Media were also on the naughty step for Pay TV.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has announced that its long-running campaign, which uses the High Court to force major UK broadband ISPs into blocking websites that are suspected of facilitating copyright infringement (internet piracy), is being extended to mobile operators – starting with EE (BT).

Seemingly in the hope of finding more ways to help those who may be struggling to pay their bills.

Network operator Freedom Fibre (FF) has today secured a major £84m investment boost from infrastructure investor Equitix, alongside a £16m Santander debt facility, to help fund the expansion of their new 10Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across semi-rural parts of North England.

Low-cost UK home broadband ISP TalkTalk is reportedly in talks that could result in the acquisition of Ovo Energy‘s internet access base, which is perhaps better known to consumers as SSE’s broadband and phone division (Ovo’s retail division doesn’t have its own packages). The deal, if agreed, could involve around 100,000 customers.

Network provider Freedom Fibre (FF), which is currently working to roll out a new 10Gbps capable FTTP broadband service – supported by investment from UK ISP partner TalkTalk – across semi-rural parts of North England, are today celebrating the successful connection of their 1,000th customer.

CityFibre has today announced that their long-running £35m project to rollout a new full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the Cambridgeshire (England) city of Peterborough has now reached “primary” completion, which means that 67,000 homes and businesses (around 85% of the city) can now access gigabit speeds.

Ofcom has published their 2022 survey of UK broadband ISP and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest providers. For example, Vodafone attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%), while BT secured the highest (88%). But overall, service quality has improved since COVID-19.

Ofcom has proposed to tweak their 2019 voluntary Code of Practice for Broadband ISP Speeds, which will extend the current ‘Right to Exit‘ (i.e. when an ISP fails to correct a problem with broadband speeds) to the latest definition of service bundles. It will also require FTTP and cable ISPs to provide details on observed line speeds.

In a sign of things to come, it’s interesting to note that the recent free trade agreement between Australia and the United Kingdom included measures that require both sides to provide injunctive relief for website blocking by broadband ISPs – targeted at sites that are found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

Budget home broadband ISP TalkTalk appears to be getting closer to launching their own take on a Digital Voice (VoIP) product to replace analogue phone services, which will come alongside a number of connectivity options. One of those will also include the introduction of a new ‘Wi-Fi Hub 2‘ router.

Ofcom has today posted some additional analysis on the impact of their End-of-Contract Notifications (ECN) system, which reveals that customer re-contracting on major broadband ISPs has increased as a result of its introduction – varying from a rise of 13% on Plusnet to just 3% on TalkTalk.

Internet traffic across UK broadband ISPs surged last night as people tuned in to stream the Champions League semi-final and to download the latest 40GB (GigaByte) ‘Season 3’ update for the popular ‘Call of Duty Warzone’ video game. As a result, TalkTalk set a new peak traffic record of 8.715Tbps (Terabits per second).
