Network access provider Openreach (BT) has reportedly warned the heavily indebted UK broadband ISP TalkTalk that they could block them from putting new customers on to their network. The threat allegedly arose after the ISP missed several monthly payment deadlines to the network operator, its biggest supplier, due to cash flow issues.

Struggling internet service provider TalkTalk is reportedly withholding millions of pounds from Sky (Sky TV, Sky Broadband etc.) due to a contractual dispute, which relates to fees owed for use of the media giant’s NOW TV video streaming service. The budget ISP had been offering this to customers until relatively recently (part of a bundle via a single bill).

Ofcom has today published their 2025 study of UK broadband, phone and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaint levels, fault repairs, compensation and install times for the largest providers. For example, TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%) and Plusnet (BT) secured the highest (91%).

Network operator CityFibre, which has so far built their 2.5Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 4.4 million UK premises (4.2m Ready for Service), have today confirmed the completion of their “primary” £30 million build in the Suffolk (England) town of Ipswich.

The TalkTalk Group has confirmed to ISPreview that some 95,000 customers of ISP Origin Broadband, which is a trading name for Origin Communications and OB Telecom (owned by TalkTalk), are being transferred to Utility Warehouse (UW / Telecom Plus) as part of a recently agreed partnership.

A new preview of the TalkTalk group’s next set of annual accounts has reportedly revealed that the UK internet provider is continuing to haemorrhage broadband customers. The latest figure puts them at around 3.2 million customers as of February 2025 (down from 3.6m last year).

Ofcom have today published their latest quarterly (Q4 2024) study of UK consumer telecoms complaints, which shames NOW Broadband (NOW TV) and TalkTalk for attracting the most complaints about broadband, while O2 took the most heat for Mobile and Virgin Media was put on the naughty step for Pay TV services.

Internet provider TalkTalk has today launched a free new tool called ‘Broadband Proactive Alerts‘, which is designed to notify customers about local network issues, “often before they even notice a problem“. But only some of the provider’s customers will be able to benefit from it.

Customers of broadband ISP TalkTalk Business (TTB) are once again able to use the provider’s email service after a protracted service outage, which lasted nearly a full week and appears as if it was caused by a misconfiguration of their Domain Name System / Servers (DNS).

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published a new report that examines how the UK’s broadband experience varies across speed tiers, with homes on “ultrafast” (300Mbps+) connections enjoying a “smoother and more reliable” service than those on “superfast” (30-300Mbps) ones. ISPs EE, Vodafone and Plusnet topped the performance rankings.

Consumer magazine Which? has published the results from their latest broadband ISP satisfaction survey, which questioned 4,347 UK adults (Dec 2024 to Jan 2025) about their internet providers. Overall three ISPs were labelled ‘Recommended Providers‘ – Zen Internet, Plusnet and Utility Warehouse, while NOW TV (NOW Broadband) and Virgin Media were ranked at the bottom.

Some customers of UK internet provider TalkTalk appear to be struggling to access certain websites, including major ones like github.io, due to what appears to be some sort of peering or routing issue. The ISP’s network teams are said to be “currently investigating” the ongoing issue.

The UK government has published its revised Telecare National Action Plan (TNAP), which will require major UK broadband and phone providers (e.g. BT, Virgin Media, Vodafone and Sky Broadband) to go further with protecting vulnerable telecare users when upgrading legacy phone lines to new digital (IP based) networks.

Internet service provider TalkTalk has today become the first major UK ISP to sign a deal that will see them adopting the cloud-based Kraken platform (part of Octopus Energy Group). The move is said to be part of the provider’s “ambition to become the most recommended Wi-Fi provider in the UK” (they obviously really mean broadband provider).
