UK ISP TalkTalk has published a short trading update for the three months to 30th June 2018 (Q1 FY19), which finally gives us a solid figure for their broadband subscriber base of 4,219,000 and that’s because it grew by +80,000 net adds in the quarter (Q1 FY18: +20k, Q4 FY18: +109k). There’s also a small update on FTTH in York.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has today claimed to be launching “Britain’s lowest price Sky Sports deal,” which enables customers of their YouView (IPTV) based Pay TV, phone and “Faster Fibre” (FTTC) broadband service to get Sky Sports for just £15 extra per month for 9 months (£34 thereafter.).

Two influential investment advisers – The Investment Association (IA) and Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) – have encouraged investors in TalkTalk’s UK broadband ISP business to oppose the re-election of Executive Chairman, Sir Charles Dunstone, after a controversial £200m share placing (19.99% of existing stock).

An unspecified network problem has been preventing TalkTalk’s broadband ISP customers from accessing any servers belonging to the website hosting company UK2.net since earlier this morning. At the time of writing nobody appears to know quite when it will be resolved.

UK ISP TalkTalk has this afternoon announced a joint agreement “not to proceed with the proposed sale” of their direct B2B business customers to The Daisy Group. The sudden announcement follows a tumultuous week for Daisy (here), which lost its CEO after a failed attempt to sell the business.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has slashed the monthly price of their 63Mbps ‘Faster Fibre Large‘ (FTTC / VDSL2) unlimited superfast broadband and phone line rental package to just £25 per month for the first 18 months of service, which for the first time means they can match Vodafone. But it’s only available until 12th July 2018.

The first six months of 2018 recorded another rise in average fixed home broadband download speeds to 33.29Mbps (7.82Mbps upload) among the top 10 ISPs, which continues to be fuelled by the rising adoption of faster FTTC, FTTP and Cable lines. Average mobile data speeds also hit 18.87Mbps (5.02Mbps upload).

The United Kingdom’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO) appears to have echoed the British Phonographic Industry’s (BPI) recent call (here) for it to be made both cheaper and easier to get websites – those that facilitate internet piracy – blocked by major broadband ISPs, possibly by removing the court process.

BT and three other broadband and mobile operators have today won their battle in the Supreme Court with Cartier, which challenged whether it was right for them to suffer the costs of implementing blocks against websites that were found to be selling counterfeit goods (i.e. abuse of Trade Mark).

How important is the perceived reputation of a broadband ISP when looking to switch providers? A new ISPreview.co.uk poll of 5,000 readers found 79.7% agreed that their choice could be impacted by reputation, while Sky Broadband and Virgin Media faired best among the largest four players.

A new study conducted by the Open Rights Group has claimed that around 37% of court ordered website blocks in the UK, which are often enforced by large broadband providers against copyright infringing websites (internet piracy), are done in error and being “improperly administrated by ISPs and rights holders.”

Customers of UK ISPs such as Sky Broadband and TalkTalk are this morning being affected by a loss of broadband and phone services across several exchanges in East Scotland, with some pointing the finger of blame at a damaged core network cable from Virgin Media.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today published their latest half year results to 31st March (FY 2018), which saw them add +109K new on-net broadband subscribers in the final quarter to total 4,139,000. We also got an update on their “full fibre” FTTH/P plans and they’re selling their direct B2B business to Daisy for £175m.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI), which represents the recorded music sector, has called for the Government’s forthcoming ‘Internet Safety Strategy‘ to add new measures that would make it easier for copyright holders to get websites that facilitate internet piracy blocked or completely removed.

One of the older D-Link based ADSL2+ broadband routers from UK ISP TalkTalk has been found to still be vulnerable to a security exploit, which was first notified to the provider all the way back in 2014. This enables a hacker to gain access to your wireless (WiFi) network by sniffing out the WPS password.

New customers of budget ISP TalkTalk look set to start receiving a faster and much more capable broadband router with their orders, which comes after ISPreview.co.uk discovered the existence of a new Wi-Fi Hub. At this stage we don’t have a lot of detail to share but we do know the core specifications.

The budget ISP price war continues today as UK ISP TalkTalk discounts their standard unlimited and superfast “fibre” (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband packages down to an even lower level. Prices now start at £17 a month for ‘Fast Broadband‘ (17Mbps) and £22.50 for ‘Faster Fibre‘ (38Mbps) etc.
