UK Competition Regulator to Examine BT’s Superfast Broadband Prices

Opposing appeals by both BT and TalkTalk against the approach taken last year by Ofcom’s new “margin squeeze” test, which is designed to keep the incumbent operator’s FTTC “fibre broadband” prices under control, have today been referred to the Competition and Markets Authority.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has confirmed that they’ve opened an investigation after TalkTalk admitted that they’d got the pricing wrong on one of their snail mailed leaflet adverts, which promised that new customers could “save up to £476 vs BT, [Sky Broadband] and [Virgin Media]“.

At the end of last week TalkTalk informed their broadband and phone customers that “less than” 1.2 million customer email addresses, names and phone numbers had been compromised by the cyber-attack on their website (here), but today this has been sharply revised down to the figure of 156,959.
