The UK telecoms regulator claims Virgin Media, BT and TalkTalk have all agreed to help address the problem of poor business broadband speeds by jointly working to build a new Code of Practice, which is similar to the code that already works to protect consumers from slow Internet speeds.

Internet provider TalkTalk has revealed the first package and price details for their new 940Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband network in the city of York (England), which as we revealed last month is being called Ultra Fibre Optic (UFO). Existing customers will effectively get it at “no extra cost“.

After several years and various legal challenges the UK telecoms regulator has proposed what could be the final resolution to a long running dispute relating to BT’s overcharging for business Ethernet services, which initially required them to repay £94.8m to Sky (Sky Broadband), TalkTalk, Virgin Media, Cable & Wireless Worldwide (Vodafone) and Verizon.

Consumer magazine Which? has published a new report that attacks some of the biggest broadband ISPs, particularly BT, TalkTalk and PlusNet, for allegedly continuing to promote Internet download speeds that the majority of their customers will never be able to achieve. But are tougher advertising rules the best fix?

Budget ISP TalkTalk has announced that their top Plus TV bundle of unlimited broadband, phone (anytime UK calls), premium TV content (YouView) and a free mobile SIM is being reduced from £20 to just £10 per month for the first 18 months of service. A £100 Love2shop voucher has also been thrown in.

Budget Internet provider TalkTalk has announced that their ‘up to’ 38Mbps capable unlimited “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) package, which is currently priced at just £5 per month for the first 12 months of service (£15 thereafter), has now added free installation into the mix (saving another one-off fee of £25).

UK ISP Sky Broadband has successfully nudged the Advertising Standards Authority to ban a TalkTalk press advert, which was ultimately ruled to have misleadingly claimed to offer “Britain’s Best Deals on totally unlimited broadband packages“.

Consumer magazine Which? has surveyed 7,057 of its readers to learn which companies offered the country’s best and worst customer call centres. Unfortunately it’s bad news for BT and TalkTalk, which both ranked the lowest with just a single star out of five for satisfaction. Meanwhile Zen Internet did well to come top with five starts.

Telecoms giant BT has formally tabled an appeal with the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT) against Ofcom’s new “margin squeeze” test, which is designed to keep the operators FTTC “fibre broadband” prices under control by forcing them to “maintain a sufficient margin between [their] wholesale and retail superfast broadband charges“.

UK ISP TalkTalk has posted their latest results for Q1-2015 (calendar), which revealed that the provider added +47k broadband subscribers in the quarter to total 4,283,000 (sharply up from +15k added in Q4 2014). But there’s bad news for some of the recent off-net (BT based) broadband customer gains from Virgin Media and Tesco.

The communications regulator has today published their latest quarterly consumer complaints report to the end of 2014 and unsurprisingly, despite a general flatness in complaint volumes, there are still some familiar names topping the tables. We’re looking at you EE (fixed broadband and phone), Vodafone (mobile) and BT (Pay TV).

Netflix, the popular Internet movie and TV streaming provider, has just published their latest April 2015 ISP Speed Index update for the United Kingdom and revealed that Virgin Media is still holding the top spot with a score of 3.74Mbps (Megabits per second). But take with the usual pinch of salt.

Until recently only TalkTalk’s superfast “Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) subscribers could benefit from the free inclusion of the ISPs Gigabit (1000Mbps+) WiFi capable wireless ‘Super Router‘ (Huawei HG633). But now new customers who take the ISPs Plus TV bundle, be they ADSL or VDSL based, will also receive the device.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a TV advert for TalkTalk’s unlimited broadband service after it misleadingly claimed to offer a “network connection that’s a whopping 99.9% reliable” and because it also failed to make clear that the offer was only available to new customers.

The results from the annual Broadband Genie 2015 survey have been announced, which saw PlusNet come top in four of the five survey categories (overall satisfaction score of 76%) to secure the Best Broadband Provider award. But Virgin Media (75%) and Sky Broadband (73%) weren’t far behind.
