The telecoms regulator has today published their re-jigged annual 2016 report into the Internet performance of the United Kingdom’s largest fixed line home broadband ISPs and their customers, which reveals that the average home download speed has jumped from 22.8Mbps last year to 28.9Mbps now. But the gap between rural and urban areas is still significant.

Consumer magazine Which? has this week published the outcome from their latest reader survey of broadband ISP satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet and Utility Warehouse win the highest ratings. Unfortunately the same could not be said for TalkTalk, which had the lowest score by far.

Budget ISP TalkTalk are continuing to work on their image after last year’s security woes (e.g. here and here) and have today taken another step forward by allowing all 4 million of their customers to use their own voice as their password (aka – ‘TalkSafe‘).

Users of TalkTalk’s broadband based TV bundles are being offered a “taster week” of free access to the History Channel, which runs from 14th to 21st March 2016. On top of that the ISP has also reiterated their commitment to security in the wake of several recent scams and cyber-attacks.

Several major broadband ISPs including BT, Sky Broadband, EE, TalkTalk and Virgin Media will in April go to the Court of Appeal (London) in order to argue against a 2014 ruling by the High Court, which extended court ordered website blocks to include sites that sell counterfeit goods (abuse of Trade Mark).

Internet provider TalkTalk are continuing to try and win back the trust of subscribers and today’s effort involves offering both new and existing customers of their SimplyBroadband and Essentials TV bundles a free Mobile SIM worth £90 (100 minutes, 250 texts and 200MB of data).

Customers of TalkTalk’s Internet and phone services could be forgiven for feeling a little uneasy this morning after several of their websites appeared to wobble. Meanwhile a number of email problems have also hit the provider.

The latest annual UK Home Broadband Genie 2015 survey has announced that Virgin Media came out top as the overall “Best Broadband Provider“, although Sky Broadband and PlusNet also managed to pick up a few awards in different categories. Sadly TalkTalk often found itself at the bottom of the pack.

Oh no, not again. TalkTalk has found itself in yet more hot water over their security after the ISP admitted that private information being held by its own “BrightSparks” engineers (NOT Openreach) had been compromised and strategically abused to defraud several subscribers.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today announced that they’ve joined ten other broadband and mobile providers in signing Ofcom’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Nuisance Calls, which commits them to develop new technical measures for “reducing the impact of unlawful nuisance calls on consumers“.

As feared last year’s cyber-attack (here) had a significant impact upon TalkTalk, albeit not nearly as big as some had predicted (here), with today’s vague trading update reporting that the ISP’s on-net subscriber base declined by -101,000 during the final quarter of 2015 (calendar).

Relations between UK broadband provider TalkTalk and sub-contractor Wipro, which operates their outsourced call centre(s) in India, have been strained after the ISP identified three customer support agents that appeared to be stealing personal data from subscribers and using it in scams.

The next set of financial results from TalkTalk aren’t due until 2nd February 2016, but that hasn’t stopped a new Kantar Worldpanel report from predicting that the ISP may have lost up to 7% (200,000 – 300,000) of its broadband base in the final quarter of 2015 after last October’s Cyber-Attack.

A new joint study from Ofcom and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled that the current approach to broadband price advertising is “likely to mislead” and as a result UK ISPs will, from 30th May 2016, be forced to adapt their approach. But the new approach may create some problems of its own.
