Money Pounds Savings for UK Homes

The MSP for the Shetland Islands (Scotland), Beatrice Wishart (LibDem), has helped to highlight the challenge of connecting some very remote rural communities after one group of 15 properties was quoted £725,000 to get faster broadband installed under the 10Mbps+ Universal Service Obligation (USO).

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today published a Spring 2022 progress update for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout, which among other things adds new regional procurements in Norfolk and Suffolk and two local supplier procurements in Cornwall, potentially extending 1Gbps speeds to c.190,000 premises.

Ofcom’s latest Spring 2022 report into fixed broadband and mobile coverage has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 33% of the UK (up from 28% in Sept 2021), while 19.3 million homes (66%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 47%). Geographic 5G coverage has also improved.

UK ISP BT has today issued their latest biannual study into the progress they’ve made toward delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which reveals that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 4,600 premises, with more than 2,300 further builds in progress.

A new survey of 2,019 UK residents with broadband connections, which was conducted by National Broadband, has claimed that almost two thirds (63%) of broadband users in the UK do not know they are entitled to demand access to download speeds of 10Mbps+ (Universal Service Obligation). But this conclusion might not be correct.

Back in January the Government’s Building Digital UK team “soft launched” a new National Rolling Open Market Review (NROMR) process for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout with a limited number of suppliers (here). Today they’ve launched another NROMR and are opening it up to more suppliers.

The UK Government’s Building Digital UK team has published an update on the start of their first procurements under the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout, which is now inviting bids for contracts worth up to £292m to upgrade rural premises across Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Cambridgeshire, Dorset and Teesdale.

The UK Government has just published a response to its consultation on the question of how significantly faster broadband ISP networks can be extended to reach the final 0.3% of the country (i.e. under 100,000 premises), which are too expensive for their new £5bn Project Gigabit programme to reach in its current form.

Reports over the weekend appear to have all but confirmed that the UK Government will end the existing BBC TV licence fee from 2027 and replace it with a new funding model, which could include a Netflix style subscription model, government grants, more advertising or possibly a levy or tax on consumer broadband ISP bills etc.

The latest State of Rural Services report, which is being published today by Rural England CIC, has warned that many people in the country’s small towns and villages still face being “digitally excluded and locked out of key services” due to an “underinvestment in rural connectivity” (e.g. broadband and mobile infrastructure) and skills.

The UK Government’s Building Digital UK team has today “soft launched” a new “Rolling National Open Market Review” (RN-OMR) process for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband scheme, which aims to do a better job of identifying areas that will benefit from a commercial rollout so that they can more effectively target public money towards those who will miss out.

The latest independent biannual summary of UK broadband coverage for H2 2021 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have now increased their reach to 30.23% of premises (up from 24.33% in H1 2021), while 65.27% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 41.72%) and 67.63% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 66.9%).

Ofcom has released their Connection Nations 2021 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that the coverage of “gigabit-capable” (1Gbps+) broadband ISP networks has jumped from 27% last year to 47% now (13.7 million households). Plus, around half of UK properties are in areas where 5G mobile is available outside.

A new report has used data from 276,083 consumer speedtests to reveal the top 10 fastest and slowest streets for broadband ISP download speed in the UK. The slowest street was found to be Wistaston Road (Crewe) in Cheshire on just 0.24Mbps, while the fastest was Haul Fryn (Birchgrove) in Swansea on 882Mbps.

After a long delay due to COVID-19, the European Commission has today published their annual 2021 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which reveals how the EU’s fixed line broadband ISP and mobile networks compare. The UK was removed from this edition due to Brexit, so we’ve used Ofcom’s data to compare.

Ofcom has today finalised the changes that were first confirmed in July to improve how BT handles delivery of the UK’s Universal Service Obligation (USO), which aims to bring faster broadband ISP speeds to those who can’t yet receive a 10Mbps+ capable download speed and aren’t planned to do so in the near future.

UK ISP BT and satellite operator OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK government, have today officially signed a Distribution Partner Agreement that could result in faster low-latency backhaul and broadband solutions for businesses. Further down the line, it may also help to cover rural homes by fuelling Fixed Wireless Access.
