Software and internet giant Microsoft have announced that they’re increasing the monthly price of their online Game Pass service for multiplayer Xbox and PC gamers. On top of that, they’re soon be replacing the standard sub for Xbox users, which means you’ll have to stump up for ‘Game Pass Ultimate‘ to access new games on release day.

Network benchmarking firm MedUX has today published the results of a new study, which examined the fixed broadband performance and quality of three major UK ISPs – BT, Sky Broadband and Vodafone. Overall, BT ended up topping the rankings, but it’s unclear why they left out TalkTalk and Virgin Media, both of which are bigger than Vodafone.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today launched a second 1.6Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) package on Openreach’s network, which is called the ‘Broadband Made for Gamers‘ bundle and claims to offer online gamers “lower latency, game server geofencing and in-home network prioritisation,” among other things.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today announced plans to deploy the next major new update (Entertainment OS v1.3) for the operating system firmware (software) that underpins their broadband-based Sky Glass and Sky Stream pay TV platforms, which will introduce a variety of new features when it begins rolling out in the next few weeks.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone have teamed up with Nokia Bell Labs to conduct a “world’s first trial” of the “viability” of harnessing L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput) technology over passive optical networks (PON), which could “greatly improve” network latency times for internet activities like AR, video conferencing and multiplayer gaming, even during peak hours.

Broadband and mobile provider VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) has today announced an expansion of their O2 Recycle scheme, which enables UK people to trade-in unwanted devices for cash, to include popular video gaming consoles from Sony (PlayStation), Microsoft (Xbox), Meta (Oculus) and Nintendo.

Internet, phone and TV provider BT (EE) has long bundled Xbox Game Passes on some of their broadband packages, particularly full fibre (FTTP) plans, which until recently often included a free 6-12 month subscription to the online gaming service. But some customers now complain the ISP has charged them for the service, without their knowledge or consent.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has reported that the release of Fortnite’s original map on Friday 3rd November 2023, which formed part of the popular video game’s “Fortnite OG” update, resulted in the operator experiencing a record daily surge in network traffic with a total of close to 154,000 TeraBytes (TB) being downloaded.
