Virgin Media, which in September became the first Pay-TV provider in the United Kingdom to offer the Netflix unlimited movie streaming service via its TiVo based broadband Video-on-Demand (VoD) platform, has announced that the new service is now out of the “successful” pilot phase and available to customers. Some will even get it for free.

BT’s recently launched BTSport TV service, which airs premium sport matches for free to their own broadband subscribers and at cost to others, has scored another major coup against Sky (Sky Broadband) and ITV after it gobbled up the exclusive broadcast rights to all 350 matches from the 2015 – 2018 UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League (football).

BT Group’s latest Q3-2013 (calendar) results reveal that the operators consumer and business ISP divisions have grown their fixed line broadband subscriber base by +156k in the quarter to total 6.961m (up from +95k added in Q2 and +136k in Q1), which includes 1.7m superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) customers (up by +195k in Q3 vs +197k added in Q2).

It took a while but Sky (Sky Broadband) has finally added ten of the UK’s top pay-tv entertainment channels (e.g. Sky Atlantic, Sky 1, Discover) to their unlimited web-based Internet TV and Movie (video streaming) service – NOW TV – and it only costs from £4.99 a month (introductory price).

PlusNet has confirmed that their residential broadband subscribers will gain access to the BTSport TV service from 5th November 2013. But you’ll need the Sky Digital TV (Satellite) platform in order to view it.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has slashed the price of its unlimited web-based Internet TV and Movie (video streaming) service, NOW TV, from £15 to £8.99 per month in the hope of becoming more competitive with rivals like Netflix and LOVEFiLM (note: the 24 hour Sky Sports Day Pass remains £9.99).

Broadband ISPs have only just got over the shock of Netflix’s introduction of a new Super HD (Super High Definition) video stream to their unlimited movie streaming service and now they’re being warned to expect an Ultra HDTV (UHDTV) 4K stream (3840 x 2160 pixels) in the not too distant future.

In an effort to pull in more subscribers BT’s consumer division has today announced that its new BTSport TV service, which is usually offered for free alongside their various home broadband and phone packages, will become available to EVERYONE with Freeview, BT TV, Sky TV (Sky Broadband) or Virgin Media TV for several weeks this month.

Internet access provider PlusNet has revealed some interesting statistics about broadband bandwidth usage and online video gaming on its network. Apparently traffic for online gaming has risen by 50% in the last 12 months and that’s after a slight decrease was recorded between 2011 and 2012.

Netflix UK‘s unlimited movie and TV streaming service has been upgraded to support a higher bit rate Super HD (Super High Definition) video stream that applies less compression to the 1080p image, which means that those with faster connections should get a better quality.

Cable operator Virgin Media has today become the first UK Pay-TV provider to reach an agreement to offer the Netflix unlimited movie streaming service via its TiVo based broadband Video-on-Demand (VoD / IPTV) platform, which will begin this week with a pilot of the app in 40,000 homes.

Entertainment giant Sony (SCEE) has confirmed that its Gaikai video streaming technology, which will allow gamers to remotely play PS3 and PS4 (PlayStation) games by using their existing broadband connection (i.e. without first having to download anything), won’t arrive in the UK and Europe until later due to concerns over the quality of internet access.

As expected BT’s consumer ISP division has today made its new BTSport TV service available to their customers, which among other things will be showing 38 live Barclays Premier League football and 69 live Aviva Premiership rugby matches. It’s also being offered for free alongside their various home broadband and phone packages.
