Customers that spent £4.99 a month to purchase the Entertainment Pass for Sky’s broadband-based NOW TV service, which is supposed to include access to 10 of their top pay-tv channels (e.g. Sky Atlantic, Sky 1, Discovery etc.), have been left disappointed because many of the shows are blocked due to “Rights Restrictions“.

Customers of BT’s YouView (IPTV) and broadband powered TV service have today been introduced to a much smaller version of their set-top-box (DTR-T2100) device (partly because it doesn’t need a fan), which adopts a similar style to the operators Home Hub 4 and Home Hub 5 routers. But still no built-in WiFi connectivity.

Who needs YouView (IPTV) anyway? The BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Digital UK appear to be considering a third bash at the Internet based catch-up TV game (aka – Freeview Connect) after their last attempt, YouView, ended up becoming more of a commercial customer retention tool for the big broadband ISPs (e.g. TalkTalk and BT).

The CEO of BT Group, Gavin Patterson, has confirmed that the operator is already conducting trials of 4K video streaming (Ultra HDTV – 3840 x 2160 pixels) technology for its BT TV and sport content. But you’ll need a good broadband connection to benefit.

The retail division of BT has ended 2013 with a total fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base of 7,111,000 and that represents a stable growth of +150k in Q4 2013 (down slightly from +156k in Q3). The figure includes 1.9 Million superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) customers (up by +228k in Q4 vs +195k added in Q3).

Internet technology giant Google has launched a new Video Quality Report service, which effectively benchmarks the performance of different broadband ISPs by how effectively they can stream videos from its hugely popular YouTube video streaming site. Now if only it was available to the United Kingdom.

Netflix UK‘s unlimited Internet movie and TV video streaming service has published its final ISP Speed Index update for December 2013, which reveals that Virgin Media continued to deliver the best performance for its service and BT came a close second.

Customers that make use of Virgin Media’s TV Anywhere App on iOS devices (e.g. iPhone, iPad etc.), specifically when connected to their home broadband network, have been unable to use the service properly for the past few days due to an unspecified fault.

Entertainment giant Sony has this week officially announced the launch of their new cloud-based PlayStation Now (PS Now) service, which works in a similar way to OnLive by using Gaikai video streaming tech to allow gamers to remotely play console games via their existing broadband ISP connection (without having to download anything).

Internet technology giant Google has confirmed that its massively popular online video streaming service, YouTube, will soon give consumer broadband ISP connections a run for their money when they join Netflix to begin streaming “lower bandwidth” 4K videos (Ultra HDTV – 3840 x 2160 pixels) using the new VP9 standard.

Virgin Media, which in September became the first Pay-TV provider in the United Kingdom to offer the Netflix unlimited movie streaming service via its TiVo based broadband Video-on-Demand (VoD) platform, has announced that the new service is now out of the “successful” pilot phase and available to customers. Some will even get it for free.

BT’s recently launched BTSport TV service, which airs premium sport matches for free to their own broadband subscribers and at cost to others, has scored another major coup against Sky (Sky Broadband) and ITV after it gobbled up the exclusive broadcast rights to all 350 matches from the 2015 – 2018 UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League (football).

BT Group’s latest Q3-2013 (calendar) results reveal that the operators consumer and business ISP divisions have grown their fixed line broadband subscriber base by +156k in the quarter to total 6.961m (up from +95k added in Q2 and +136k in Q1), which includes 1.7m superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) customers (up by +195k in Q3 vs +197k added in Q2).

It took a while but Sky (Sky Broadband) has finally added ten of the UK’s top pay-tv entertainment channels (e.g. Sky Atlantic, Sky 1, Discover) to their unlimited web-based Internet TV and Movie (video streaming) service – NOW TV – and it only costs from £4.99 a month (introductory price).

PlusNet has confirmed that their residential broadband subscribers will gain access to the BTSport TV service from 5th November 2013. But you’ll need the Sky Digital TV (Satellite) platform in order to view it.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has slashed the price of its unlimited web-based Internet TV and Movie (video streaming) service, NOW TV, from £15 to £8.99 per month in the hope of becoming more competitive with rivals like Netflix and LOVEFiLM (note: the 24 hour Sky Sports Day Pass remains £9.99).

Customers of PlusNet’s broadband service should soon gain access to the BTSport TV service but it’s not being offered for free and oddly it only appears to be available over the Sky Digital TV (satellite) platform.
