The popular broadband internet based video-on-demand and catch-up TV (IPTV) service, YouView, looks set to expand beyond its current approach of working with ISPs (e.g. BT, JT and TalkTalk) to bundle special set-top-boxes and adopt a more multi-platform approach.

Netflix UK‘s unlimited movie and TV video streaming service has released its latest monthly Netflix ISP Speed Index update for June 2013, which is designed to reveal which ISPs deliver “the best streaming experience“. Suffice to say that not a lot has changed since earlier this year and Virgin Media remains top.

Cable provider Virgin Media has launched a new “Helping Hands” channel on YouTube today that’s designed to help its home customers make the most of their broadband connections and other services.

Some customers of the BT Vision TV (IPTV) service could this weekend lose access to the Sky Sports 1 and 2 TV channels unless they have a good standard broadband connection or take the operators superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) service alongside their package.

The Tuesday night launch of Microsoft’s new XBox One console triggered a “big spike” in UK internet traffic as people tuned-in to the various live video streams and websites. Traffic on one of the Content Delivery Networks within TalkTalk’s infrastructure rose from 80Gbps (Gigabits per second) to 120Gbps and the same was true of other ISPs.

Netflix UK, the unlimited movie and TV video streaming service, has launched a new Netflix ISP Speed Index website that is designed to give consumers “insight into which Internet Service Providers [deliver] the best streaming experience“.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that UK broadcasters, such as ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, have the right to block retransmission of free-to-air TV (e.g. Freeview) programming over the Internet unless the related service (e.g. TVCatchup Ltd) gains specific permission. But they haven’t won yet.

Researchers at the University of Aberdeen (UA) in Scotland, supported by BT and Alcatel-Lucent, are seeking to “increase the speed of the Internet” by re-writing the way computers and network devices (e.g. routers) talk to each other so as to improve latency times (ping) and potentially make multiplayer games and video streaming smoother.

The International Telecommunication Union’s recent approval of a new H.265 (ITU-T H.265 / ISO/IEC 23008-2 HEVC) video standard could help broadband ISPs to manage the growing burden of internet video traffic. Indeed some 720p HD video streams may soon be possible with a download speed of well under 1Mbps (Megabits/sec).

Netflix UK, the unlimited movies and TV subscription based video streaming service, has published its latest December 2012 rankings for broadband Internet Service Providers in the United Kingdom. The ratings reflect the average performance of all Netflix video streams on each ISP.

Cable operator Virgin Media has today announced the launch of its new Virgin TV Anywhere service, which allows the operators existing TV package subscribers to watch their favourite shows and channels from almost anywhere and at no extra cost; provided your fixed line or wifi can handle it (streaming over 3G is “not supported“).

The YouView (IPTV) product, which offers broadband based video-on-demand and catch-up TV services via several big UK ISPs (BT and TalkTalk), has started rolling out a new software update for its Humax set-top-boxes that will deliver various speed, sound and feature improvements.

Budget internet provider TalkTalk looks to be starting the UK roll out of their new Plus TV service this week, which combines a “free” YouView (IPTV) box with the “Plus” broadband and phone bundle. Celebrity TV star Joanna Lumley kicked off proceedings in London today but some concerns remain.

BT has announced that customers who take one of its superfast broadband BTInfinity (FTTC / P) packages (costing from just £18 a month) will from 26th October 2012 also get a FREE YouView set-top-box (normally £299) with no TV subscription fee. Except it’s not completely “free“.

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of business ISP Timico UK, Trefor Davies, has predicted that the next generation of Ultra High Definition TV (Super Hi Vision) technology will “dispel any doubts” about the need for everybody to eventually have access to a true 1Gbps capable fibre optic (FTTH / P) broadband connection.

BT has today won four years’ worth of exclusive live TV broadcasting rights for Aviva Premiership Rugby and the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Sevens from the 2013-14 season, which will be shown over its broadband IPTV service (BTVision) and could be seen as yet another challenge to Sky (Sky Broadband) and ESPN’s dominance of TV sport.

The recent launch of TalkTalk’s new YouView TV (IPTV) service (full details), which is being included alongside the ISPs unlimited broadband and anytime UK calls “Plus” package bundle, will apparently also result in the creation of 500 new jobs; most of whom will be engineers. But big challenges remain.
